About the program
The $1.3 million Social Enterprise Capability Building Program (SECBP) was created in response to needs identified during sector consultations. These discussions took place as part of market research while developing a social impact investment aimed at improving the economic wellbeing of women facing disadvantage.
SECBP was aimed at women facing disadvantage and open to early-stage and established social enterprises. The program was delivered in partnership with Social Enterprise Finance Australia (Sefa) and Social Impact Hub. Program delivery included both needs assessment of social enterprises and capability building support to address those needs.
Where we are now
SECBP was delivered from August 2023 to June 2025. The program empowered 39 social enterprises (approximately half of which were in remote regional areas) with confidence, clarity, practical tools and connections to support their growth and resilience. The support provided helped multiple participants to apply for and secure funding and further development support. SECBP enabled participants to support more women through their work, and inspired gender intentional initiatives.
Key learnings
Tailored and responsive delivery enhanced participant experience
Providing tailored support ensured that each organisation's unique needs were met, which was crucial for assisting social enterprises operating with limited resources. By customising the content, format, and delivery of guidance to suit individual founders and organisations, participants received the most relevant support to help them progress towards their goals.
Accessibility and strong connections supported engagement
Overcoming barriers to participation, such as geographic isolation, and fostering strong relationships with and among participants encouraged active involvement in the capability building initiatives. This resulted in a welcoming learning environment that enabled people from underrepresented backgrounds to recognise themselves as leaders.
Enabling environment helped enterprises develop
Support from within the social enterprise - such as leaders actively promoting positive changes - and access to complementary resources enabled participants to gain greater value from the SECBP’s assistance.
