PDNSW achieves Net Zero decades ahead of schedule
Property and Development NSW (PDNSW) is proud to announce it has achieved Net Zero emissions 25 years ahead of the NSW Government’s target date of 2050.
PDNSW, the central property agency for the NSW Government, achieved Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions across its operations in 2024-25, well ahead of the NSW Government’s mandated 2050 target. The result, which has been subject to a third-party review, is the equivalent of removing more than 2,500 cars from the road annually.
The milestone is a significant achievement and has positioned PDNSW as one of the first NSW Government agencies to achieve Net Zero.
The net zero result has been achieved through a range of initiatives, including installing solar panels on roofs on its buildings, switching to energy efficient lighting, improving building performance, installing smart batteries at 16 of its larger sites, and converting gas fired heating to efficient electric water and space heating. Electricity purchased included 100 per cent Greenpower and the remaining emissions were offset through the purchase of NSW generated Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs).
PDNSW continues to identify carbon mitigation opportunities, using tools such as AI and Internet of Things (IoT), and is revising their net zero transition plan to further reduce reliance on gas and grid supplied electricity. The plan will also address ‘hard to abate’ emissions, such as those from refrigerant gases used to cool and heat our buildings. Emissions from other sources such as waste, water and third-party activities will also be addressed.
Property and Development NSW, Chief Executive Officer, Leon Walker said:
“Property and Development NSW is proud to have achieved Net Zero emissions for our operations a remarkable 25 years before the mandated target of 2050.
“While we have achieved Net Zero, we will not be resting on our laurels. We will continue to implement our ambitious plan to further reduce emissions associated with our extensive property portfolio as part of our pathway towards true zero emissions.”
