Building a stronger emergency nursing workforce at Southern
A new program is helping build a stronger emergency nursing workforce across Southern NSW. By supporting new nurses to gain hands-on experience and expert guidance, the Emergency Nursing Transition to Specialty Practice (TTSP) program ensures local communities continue to receive safe, skilled and timely emergency care - now and into the future.
The program launched with a workshop at the ANU Rural Clinical School at Goulburn Base Hospital in July. This exciting new program is designed to support nurses who are new to emergency care, helping them build their confidence and skills over a 6- to 12-month period. It blends online learning, face-to-face workshops and hands-on experience in clinical settings.
Experienced emergency nurses Viv Chapman, Donna Skelly, Louise Casey and Danielle Smith are proud to introduce the program to the District.
Developed by clinical education experts, the course is structured to help participants grow the knowledge, skills and professionalism needed to succeed in fast-paced emergency departments.
“The transition into emergency nursing can be challenging,” said Louise.
“This program gives nurses the support, structure and confidence they need to grow into the role - and ultimately provide the best possible care for our communities.”

The program has been carefully aligned with national best practice standards, including those from the Emergency Care Institute, the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI), the College of Emergency Nursing Australasia, and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
Four course intakes are planned across Southern, each with 16 face-to-face training days. This gives nurses and Emergency Department Nurse Unit Managers the flexibility to choose the session that works best for them.
As they progress, participants build advanced capabilities in trauma care, triage, resuscitation and life support - laying a strong foundation as they become emergency care professionals.
