Delegate and Bombala students and residents connect through Adopt a Resident program

The program, which runs throughout the school year, connects students from Delegate Public School and Bombala Public School with local MPS residents for regular visits focused on conversation, activities and companionship.

During each visit, students spend time one-on-one with residents, sharing stories, reading, completing puzzles, or simply enjoying a conversation.

Southern NSW Local Health District Activity and Leisure Officer for the Bombala and Delegate MPS, Rita Thornton said the program has a meaningful impact on residents.

"There’s a real lift in mood when the students arrive. Residents become more engaged, more interactive, and they really enjoy those conversations," she said.

The initiative helps reduce social isolation while strengthening community ties, particularly important in smaller rural towns.

"It’s about connection," Rita said.

"It reminds residents they are still a valued part of the community, and it gives students a chance to build relationships across generations."

Students from Years 3 to 6 participate in the program, forming ongoing connections with their paired residents across multiple visits.

The program also encourages creativity and kindness, with students often writing letters, making crafts and bringing small gifts to share.

Delegate MPS and Bombala MPS are among several sites across Southern NSW Local Health District supporting intergenerational initiatives, recognising the positive impact they have on both young people and older residents.

With further visits planned throughout the year, the program continues to strengthen connections between generations and reinforce the important role residents play within their local communities.
