On 26 February 2025, South East Regional Hospital’s Steven Holzhauser will have clocked up 30 years of service at Southern, 18 of which have been in Pharmacy as Technician.
Steve started at Southern in Payroll at Bega District Hospital in 1995, “I was good with figures,” he said.
After stints in Stores and Salary Packaging, including a couple of months working out of Goulburn, he started in Pharmacy at Bega and has never looked back.
“It’s a rewarding role,” Steve said. “It’s hands-on and varied, and there is always something different happening.”
Steve cares passionately about his colleagues and patients and is a dedicated union man - he has been the local Health Services Union delegate for 29 years!
Alice McKellar, SNSWLHD Director of Pharmacy said Steve is an incredible advocate for the patients of SERH.
“He works very hard to ensure a continuity of medication supply for the hospital,” Alice said. “This is not always an easy task, but he puts his years of experience in pharmacy supply to good service.”
Amelia Stanley, Chief Pharmacist Coastal Network, said Steve is their go-to man in Pharmacy for any questions around stock.
“If there is a medication to be found in the hospital, at another hospital or at a wholesaler, Steve will find it and get it here,” Amelia said.
After 18 years’ experience working in pharmacy in Southern, he has more corporate knowledge that most of the Pharmacy team combined.
“Steve’s wealth of experience leads all of our team to approach Steve with any and every question under the sun of how things work in Southern.
“We are lucky to have Steve as part of our pharmacy team for so many years, and we hope many more to come,” Amelia said.
If you’re a long-term Bega Valley resident there is a good chance you know Steve. Steve grew up in the beach town of Tathra and attended Bega High School, and he now lives in Kalaru – half way between the two towns.
When not working, Steve enjoys fishing and scuba diving and is an avid supporter of the local football league; and he has enjoyed a life of adventure – travelling to south east Asia and Egypt.
