Community Heritage Program

The Community Heritage Program is joint effort between TAM and Transport for NSW to restore and reactivate regional railway stations.

Our goal is to turn underused spaces into places that offer new economic, cultural and social benefits for local communities. We do this by improving safety, public facilities and visual appeal, while bringing buildings up to modern standards.

We’ve restored stations at Blayney, Gunning, Katoomba and Bundanoon, as well as Berry residence and Hamilton signal box.

We are currently restoring stations at Scone, Taranam Bungendore, Bowenfels, Queanbeyan, Uralla, Fairfield and Petersham.

Regional Precinct Planning

We’re helping regional areas grow by planning new uses for old rail sites, like Broadmeadow and Glendale in Newcastle.

TAM is funding a masterplan that establishes a vision for these regional sites to be reused for new precincts, and affordable and diverse housing.

The master planning will set an example for how to develop underused rail property in the future, helping TAM make the most of its rail holdings to support regional communities.

Chief Mechanical Engineer's Building

Built in 1887, the building was once the headquarters of the Eveleigh Railway Yards, which employed 10,000 people to build, maintain and operate locomotives.

Now, TAM plans to turn this heritage-listed building into a new business precinct. We are working with public and private partners to create new leasing options and better connect the site to surrounding urban areas, supporting the NSW Government’s Tech Central vision.

By giving this historic building a new purpose, its railway past will be kept alive for future generations. It’s one of several important heritage sites in the Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct, and will be a key part of the Paint Shop precinct’s renewal.

Bundanoon Railway Station

TAM, with Sydney Trains, recently restored key station features including:

  • Repairs to the station, goods shed and gardens
  • Restoring historic parts like the signal box, parcel rooms and ticket office, so they look like they once did
  • Adding new signs and history panels that share the stories of people who worked at and used the station.

Local community input guided the improvements, building a strong connection between the station and the people who use it.

One of the main goals of the work is to boost rail tourism and make better use of these valuable local assets.

Blayney station - Community Heritage Program

Blayney and nearby communities have a new arts hub at the restored Blayney Station in Central West NSW.

As the site owner, TAM worked with the Blayney Shire Council and the Blayney Platform Arts Hub to create this new cultural space.

The 140-year-old station has been revitalised with reinstated heritage features, new toilets, a kitchenette and visitor experience installation.

The project team worked closely with Council and the community to develop and design the new community spaces.

Gunning - Community Heritage Program

Gunning station is now a community arts and cultural hub after being restored as part of the Residual Asset Program.

As the asset owner, TAM worked together with Transport for NSW and heritage specialists for two years to restore the 1875 building’s heritage features and upgrade amenities. Southern Tablelands Arts now uses the space for arts, cultural and community events.

The heritage repair and restoration works have transformed the station with new passenger facilities including platform facing waiting rooms and accessible bathroom facilities – the first in the town.

The project was a 2 year collaboration between TAM, Transport for NSW, Sydney Trains, NSW TrainLink and the local community.
