Transport disadvantage refers to the difficulty in accessing transport due to cost, limited service availability, or poor physical accessibility. To reduce transport disadvantage, journeys and destinations need to be accessible to everyone. This includes planning and designing our system to be accessible for the entire journey. Ensuring equitable access to services also means keeping travel affordable.
Our goal
Our goal is to connect the people of NSW to everything they need regardless of age, physical ability, location or socio-economic circumstance.
How we’ll achieve our goal
Deliver more viable transport options for underserviced communities
To reduce transport disadvantage in underserviced communities, our investment prioritisation must focus on equity, aligning our spending with population growth and targeting areas with the greatest need for access. This will include:
- Bringing a social equity lens to all aspects of transport planning and policy.
- Improving access to reliable public transport.
- Delivering more transport options for isolated, regional, outer metropolitan and growing communities in parts of Sydney.
- Improving access and inclusion outcomes and enable Closing The Gap for Aboriginal people and communities.
Deliver an accessible transport system
To reduce transport disadvantage, journeys and destinations need to be accessible to everyone. To deliver an accessible transport system we will:
- Plan and design an accessible system for the entire journey.
- Make more transport options more viable for more people.
- Make travel more affordable.
Case Study: Public transport is for everyone
Connect all people in NSW to the jobs and health, education, cultural and recreational services they need to prosper, regardless of where they live and their ability to pay.
We’re here to provide transport that works for everyone in NSW.
To improve accessibility at our train stations and wharves, we’re continuing to roll out the $800 million Safe Accessible Transport program over the next three years. It aims to make stations and wharves safe, inclusive and easy to use for all passengers, particularly:
- people with disability
- older people
- people with prams or luggage and
- those with mobility support needs.
We’ve recently upgraded Greenwich Point and South Mosman wharves, with upgrades to Griffith, Moss Vale, Queanbeyan and Tuggerah stations on the way this year.
Once complete, these stations and wharves will meet disability access standards, so they are safe, accessible and welcoming for everyone.
