Congratulations to the 2026 Local Women of the Year recipients. Each of these women has been nominated by their local Member of Parliament for their outstanding contribution to their electorate.

Dr Penelope Egan-Vine AM MBBS DCH

Albury

For more than 20 years, Dr Penelope (Penny) Egan-Vine AM MBBS DCH has shown unwavering commitment to supporting refugees in regional Australia. As a founding member and long-serving President of the Murray Valley Sanctuary Refugee Group, Penny helps reunite families, assists with resettlement and provides vital support for those arriving on humanitarian visas.

Catherine Tucker

Auburn

Catherine Tucker has transformed Carnarvon Golf Club and the community through inclusive leadership, environmental advocacy and tireless service. As the club’s first female board member and now Director, Catherine has overseen many initiatives. She welcomed the Korean women’s golfing community, introduced Landcare initiatives to restore native habitats and led efforts to protect green space for future generations.

Kellie Bowden

Badgerys Creek

Kellie Bowden is the founder of Dance Industrie in St Clair. Kellie has built Dance Industrie as an inclusive, supportive environment for children of all ages, sizes and abilities. The dance school encourages students to have fun, build friendships, keep healthy and learn. Kellie balances motherhood and business, and continues to create extraordinary opportunities for her students, including international performances.

Kylie Jacky

Ballina

Kylie Jacky, a proud Nyangbul Bundjalung woman, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to her community. As Chair of Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council, Kylie has guided Cabbage Tree Island’s recovery from the 2022 NSW floods, ensuring residents’ voices shape their future. With 25 years in NSW Government and extensive volunteer work, Kylie exemplifies integrity, resilience and cultural advocacy.

Tania Thompson

Balmain

Tania Thompson has transformed lives through tireless advocacy and grassroots leadership. As a champion for community housing, Tania fosters inclusion by connecting older and vulnerable residents to vital services, food relief programs and events. She has launched initiatives including The Women’s Forum, Golden Oldies Project and a community garden where residents meet, learn and grow together.

'Ana Taula Tu'ionuku

Bankstown

‘Ana Taula Tu’ionuku has led renewable energy projects in the Pacific Islands and supported families without main grid electricity. ‘Ana is currently pursuing a PhD on women's land rights in Tonga. She has written a bilingual Tongan book and created Australia’s first Pacific publishing house, Twinnies Publishing. Ana has also established the Twinnies Foundation to support vulnerable families in the Canterbury-Bankstown area.

Prue Ritchie

Barwon

Prue Ritchie is General Manager of Bourke and District Children’s Services, expanding the organisation with Connected Beginnings and an Indigenous Employment Strategy. Beyond work, Prue is active in governance and community organisations, including Contact Incorporated, the Isolated Children's Parents’ Association NSW and the Bourke Show Committee.

Mary Fletcher

Bathurst

Mary Fletcher has been a member and integral part of the Bathurst District Historical Society since 1995. Mary has been the society’s Photographic Curator since 2001, was made a Life Member in 2018 and was elected President in 2020. Mary is also a Life Member of the Bathurst Family History Group and served as Treasurer from 1999–2017 and 2019–2023.

Helen Slater

Bega

Helen Slater has devoted many decades to giving back to the Bega community. Helen is a committed Life Member of Hillgrove House Auxiliary, where she has dedicated 20 years to the organisation as President, grown flowers for wreaths of remembrance and fundraised for the organisation. She has also been a Life Member of the Bega Show Society and has been a driving force in the Bega Pony Club and Bega Showjumping Cup.

Elfa Moraitakis

Blacktown

Elfa Moraitakis has devoted more than 30 years to empowering culturally diverse communities. As CEO of SydWest Multicultural Services, Elfa has transformed the organisation into a leading force for social impact, delivering programs in refugee settlement, family violence prevention, aged care, disability and youth support.

Alessandra Pepper

Blue Mountains

Alessandra (Allie) Pepper is Australia’s most accomplished female high‑altitude mountaineer. Allie is currently undertaking the challenge to climb each of the world’s 14 mountain peaks over 8,000 metres without oxygen. With 12 major summits, including Everest and K2, she is the first woman to undertake this mission. Beyond the mountains, Allie is a passionate menopause ambassador, advocating for women to thrive through every stage of life. 

Nadia Rivera

Nadia Rivera

Cabramatta

Nadia Rivera has supported migrant families in Cabramatta and helped organise the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea. Nadia volunteers with the Amigos Del Hogar De Cristo Inc, raising funds for those in need. She also sings with Choir Hispano, a Spanish-speaking community choir, that brings joy to people in nursing homes and at community events. Nadia is proud to be part of the choir and share happiness through song.

Jo O'Brien

Camden

Jo O’Brien is committed to Camden’s education, heritage and community. Jo led the Superior Scientist program at Camden Public School to teach students science. She also helped preserve local history as President of the Camden Area Family History Society and Vice-President of the Camden Historical Society. Jo’s dedication, expertise and generosity have enriched generations and strengthened Camden’s identity.

Mandy Perrin

Campbelltown

Mandy Perrin has dedicated more than 30 years to amplifying Campbelltown’s stories as editor of the Macarthur Chronicle. A trailblazer and advocate, Mandy championed local issues, secured national recognition for the paper and inspired civic pride. In recognition of her strong connection with the community, Mandy's advocacy has been honoured with both Community Service and Jubilee awards by Campbelltown City Council.

Caitlyn Joseph

Canterbury

Caitlyn Joseph is a proud Dharug woman who works as an Aboriginal School Support Officer. Dedicated to student wellbeing, Caitlyn supports learning, care and social development among all students she works with. Caitlyn's outstanding support is essential to inclusive education, helping students achieve their educational and long-term social goals.

Katherine Kirk

Castle Hill

Katherine Kirk is a community leader whose work spans schools, veterans, sport and social causes in Castle Hill. As President of the Castle Hill High School P&C Association, Administrative Assistant at the Castle Hill and District RSL sub-Branch and volunteer with many local clubs and charities, Katherine champions education and supports veterans and homeless people in the Castle Hill area.

Catherine Parsons

Cessnock

Catherine Parsons has dedicated many years to the arts, community and public service. As long-serving Secretary and Convener of the Abermain Eisteddfod, Catherine has ensured its place as a Hunter Valley cultural highlight. She is a tireless volunteer, broadcaster, councillor, mentor and advocate.

Viv Allanson OAM

Charlestown

Viv Allanson OAM is a visionary leader in aged care. Viv served more than 25 years as CEO of Maroba Aged Care, Waratah. As a founding member of the Hunter Ageing Alliance, Viv has been a trusted and influential voice in regional discussions on ageing and care. She champions innovation and community engagement, mentors others and advocates for progress.

Michelle Cowan

Clarence

Michelle Cowan, a Victim Services Counsellor, has supported more than 500 survivors with compassion and care. Michelle volunteers with the Northern NSW Aboriginal Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service and has been an active member of the Acmena Community Consultative Committee. She is also a co-founding member of VoiceUp Australia, a self-support group for adult survivors of childhood abuse.

Dr Rebecca Tallis

Coffs Harbour

Recognising the need for more accessible and equitable healthcare, Dr Rebecca Tallis has established a safe and empowering medical clinic in Sawtell, primarily for women and children. The clinic delivers medical services, educational support and resources to promote holistic well-being. Despite barriers to establishing the clinic, Dr Tallis has remained unwavering, and the clinic now supports numerous women and children in the area.

Licia Heath

Coogee

Licia Heath has championed public education in Sydney’s east. Licia founded CLOSEast to secure improved funding for public education assets and a new co-ed high school, leading to Inner Sydney High School and a strengthened Randwick campus. As CEO of Women for Election, she inspires women across Australia to engage in politics.

Tina Kendall‑Davis

Cootamundra

As Founder and Director of Anytime Counselling, Tina Kendall‑Davis provides remote counselling services that eliminate waiting lists and ensure immediate, confidential help for people in rural and remote communities. Driven by personal experience, including the loss of her father to a stress‑related condition, Tina is committed to making mental health support as commonplace and approachable as a gym session.

Kathryn Wakelin

Cronulla

Kathryn Wakelin, Co-founder of Levi’s Project, has turned her personal experience into action and hope, raising $6 million for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma research and clinical trials. Through tireless fundraising and advocacy, Kathryn helped enable world-leading treatments at the Children’s Cancer Institute, including Australia’s first CAR T-cell therapy trial for childhood brain cancer.

Rev Bec Baines

Davidson

Rev Bec Baines is a Reverend and Accessibility Ministry Advisor for Youthworks. Bec is dedicated to enabling greater inclusion for young people with disability and those who are neurodivergent. She also serves as a NSW Police Chaplain, contributes to Jesus Club and volunteers at her local church. With lived experience of disability, Bec brings insight and commitment to building accessible, supportive communities.

Mary Rose Bonfante

Drummoyne

Mary Rose Bonfante is a cancer survivor, community leader and dedicated fundraiser. Mary has raised significant funds for Chris O’Brien Lifehouse through gala events and organised a Parkinson’s research fundraiser for Macquarie University. She has also volunteered for more than 15 years with the Haberfield Village business community and the ASHBiz business chamber.

Carmen Gain

Dubbo

Carmen Gain is a devoted teacher and volunteer whose leadership enriches the Wellington community. Carmen is President of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club and represents Wellington at the Western Area Swimming Association, helping to foster inclusive sporting communities. Honoured as the Wellington Redbacks Rugby Club Person of the Year, she also supports St Mary’s Catholic School, the Wellington Eisteddfod and other local events.

Bettina Vogel

East Hills

Bettina Vogel has enriched the Padstow Heights and East Hills communities through decades of volunteer service. From leading playgroups and Joey Scouts to establishing street libraries and supporting school initiatives, Bettina fosters inclusion, learning and connection. Creative, generous and tireless, her leadership has strengthened families, youth and neighbourhoods, leaving a lasting impact on community life.

Sharon Kwok

Epping

Sharon Kwok, founder of the Epping West Youth Band, has created a vibrant community initiative that unites young people through music. Under Sharon’s leadership, the band fosters confidence, teamwork and mentorship while performing at local events, from Dawn Services to aged care facilities. Her vision and dedication empower youth to grow and give back to community.

Genelle Petruszenko

Fairfield

Genelle Petruszenko, Principal of Fairfield West Public School, has dedicated more than 35 years to education and community leadership. Under Genelle’s guidance, the school has become a hub of inclusion through initiatives such as the community garden and the Community Cottage, which offers English classes for parents.

Jayne Mote

Gosford

Jayne Mote has devoted more than 6 decades to community service, founding Rotary Brisbane Water and leading countless initiatives locally and internationally. A Paul Harris Fellow (one of Rotary’s highest honours) and the recipient of a Living Legend Award for more than a decade of volunteer service, Jayne has championed youth, community wellbeing and global goodwill. She has transformed lives and strengthened the Central Coast community.

Jennifer Medway

Goulburn

Jennifer Medway, a fifth-generation Southern Tablelands farmer, is a regional leader dedicated to community and agriculture. Jennifer is Secretary of the Gunning Show and President of both the Merrill Rural Fire Brigade and NSW Farmers’ Yass Branch. She also serves with Gunning Community Care, which delivers health and support services. Jennifer champions local events while promoting the wool industry and inspiring the next generation of farmers.

Dr Jeanie Wood PhD BA (hons)

Granville

Dr Jeanie Wood PhD BA (hons), Group Leader of the 1st/2nd Merrylands (St Anne’s) Scout Group, has a lifetime commitment to the Scouts. Jeanie has helped others to achieve the Queen’s Scout Awards and NSW Scout of the Year. Recognised with the Alan Overton AM Award for Excellence in Scouting, she has also preserved Scout history and contributed to the Cumberland Gang Show, which helps young people develop their self-confidence.

Genean Beetson

Hawkesbury

Genean Beetson, founder of Hooves for Hope, provides community care, counselling and trauma recovery through connection with horses. Genean believes horses have an incredible capacity to teach and comfort humans, and she’s used this passion to provide a safe space for children, teens, adults, veterans first responders and neurodivergent individuals, looking for emotional support, skill building and healing.

Neridah Armstrong

Heathcote

Neridah Armstrong is a passionate advocate for fairness and inclusion in Heathcote. Neridah has championed improved access to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication, drawing on her own lived experience to push for change in the health system by reducing specialist wait times, helping with the financial strain of ongoing treatment and removing the negative stigma associated with ADHD.

Anthia Psarras

Heffron

Anthia Psarras has given more than a decade of dedicated service to Eastlakes Public School. Under Anthia’s stewardship, the school has strengthened its culture, uplifted NAPLAN performance and adapted to the evolving needs of its community. Accredited with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), Anthia contributes to NESA initiatives and works with fellow principals to enhance professional standards and teacher development.

Katherine Louise Eagle

Holsworthy

Katherine Louise Eagle has been a driving force in local school and sporting communities across Holsworthy. Katherine has served for many years in the Newbridge Heights Public School P&C Association, building inclusive connections for families and supporting the school with fundraising initiatives. She is also a manager with Moorebank Baseball-Softball Club and Moorebank Soccer Club, supporting countless young athletes.

Ann Leslie

Hornsby

Ann Leslie has made an outstanding contribution to the Hornsby community. Ann is the Founder of the Women’s Shelter Mini Fete, raising thousands of dollars for women and children experiencing domestic violence or homelessness. She also leads Carols Under the Stars, directed the local Christmas Pantomime, supports St Mark’s Church and teaches music. Ann's work has international reach, as she is currently fundraising to provide equipment for a school in Rwanda as the Fundraising and Communications Coordinator at African Enterprise.

Keira

Val Fell OAM is an advocate for dementia awareness. Following the death of her husband, who lived with dementia for nearly a decade, Val started a local support group for carers of people living with dementia in Corrimal and an annual Illawarra Dementia Forum. Val has completed short courses with Dementia Australia and the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and at the age of 93, enrolled in a Bachelor of Dementia Care at UTAS.

Kylie Harvey

Kellyville

Kylie Harvey has been a trailblazer for Kellyville United Football Club, becoming its first female Team Manager and Coach. Kylie currently manages and coaches teams with the club, and has created a successful summer soccer program. Her outstanding contributions were honoured when she received the club's prestigious Dave Duggan Award. Kylie’s leadership paves the way for women in sport and motivates others across the community.

Irene Birks

Kiama

Irene Birks has devoted nearly 2 decades to volunteering across Berry and the Shoalhaven regions. Irene has served nearly 20 years with the Australian Red Cross, spent 10 years as a Lifeline counsellor and has supported many other aged care organisations. She is also a committee member for Meals on Wheels, helping deliver essential nutrition services to seniors, and volunteers with Shoalhaven Palliative Care, providing comfort to families.

Suzanne Eggins

Kiama

Suzanne Eggins has transformed the way Kiama celebrates and preserves its cultural heritage. Suzanne has led the Kiama Historical Society since the mid-1980s and oversees the Pilot’s Cottage Museum, which houses local heritage artefacts accessible to the entire community. Through compelling storytelling and tireless advocacy, Suzanne has helped enrich Kiama's cultural identity.

Mrs Lai Fong Teng

Kogarah

Mrs Lai Fong Teng (Miranda) is dedicated to her community. She has volunteered at the Nan Tien Buddhist temple for more than 25 years and currently serves as President of the Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) Mudita. Miranda also mentors younger generations through the BLIA Sydney Kogarah Scout Group, instilling values of respect and responsibility. Her service has made her a pillar of the community and an inspiring role model.

Chris Gavenlock

Lake Macquarie

For nearly 30 years, Chris Gavenlock has preserved the history of Morisset Hospital. Chris formed the Morisset Hospital Historical Society and interviewed people, hunting down information to publish a book on its history called A Private World on a Nameless Bay. She also runs a small museum in the hospital. Following her diagnosis of dystonia, Chris has become a supporter and advocate of the Dystonia Network of Australia.

Karen Neville

Lane Cove

Karen Neville helped transform the Lane Cove Toy Library into a thriving hub with more than 1,700 toys, attracting more than 260 member families. Karen has created opportunities for people with disability, spearheading partnerships between the Toy Library and organisations such as Luz All Abilities and Omnia Inclusive Employment Solutions. Through these collaborations, Karen has helped individuals with disability gain valuable experience.

June Young OAM

Leppington

June Young OAM has dedicated decades to community service, volunteering across organisations including Quota International, Rotary International, Legacy, Lifeline Macarthur and Fairfield RSL. A Justice of the Peace for 45 years, June has led countless committees, fundraisers and support initiatives, raising significant funds for local causes that strengthen and support others.

Susanna Freymark

Lismore

Susanna Freymark is a journalist and author who has strengthened regional media, education and the arts. Susanna founded online and print newspapers, The Indy and The Inky respectively, reporting on council meetings, funeral notices and community updates. She also wrote and produced a documentary about the 2022 NSW floods, Tinnie Heroes, and is currently working on a Kyogle Country Story project, celebrating why people love living in Kyogle.

Daniela Galgoczy

Liverpool

Daniela Galgoczy has served as President of the Hinchinbrook Public School P&C Association since 2022, exemplifying leadership and community spirit. Under Daniela’s guidance, the P&C secured major grants for outdoor learning spaces – a milestone achieved through her strategic grant writing. She has also expanded membership and strengthened the partnership between Hinchinbrook Public School and the P&C, further enriching the school community.

Joanne Tomic is a driving force in St Marys. After establishing a successful local business, Joanne joined St Marys Town Centre as a Director in 2014 and later became Town Centre Manager. Renowned for her innovative leadership, Joanne fosters positivity, connection and growth through events, initiatives, murals and local community engagement.

Jennifer Watt

Macquarie Fields

Jennifer Watt has dedicated more than 40 years to volunteering, most notably as a coordinator of the Ingleburn Knitting Group. Through her leadership, the group has crafted items for Campbelltown and Liverpool hospitals, women’s refuge centres and people living with dementia. Jennifer has also raised $14,000 through Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraisers, volunteered on school committees and supported local Girl Guides.

Maitland

Barbara Bird has dedicated her life to volunteering and growing netball in the Hunter Region. A player, coach, umpire and leader, Barbara has served Maitland District Netball Association for 42 years, raising vital funds and driving major projects including the $3 million Maitland Park redevelopment. Beyond netball, Barbara has volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, and local schools.

Megan Maack

Manly

Megan Maack, Founder and CEO of the Childhood Dementia Initiative, has transformed care by uniting more than 145 rare, life-limiting conditions under one banner, reframing an often-overlooked issue as a national health priority. Motivated by her children’s childhood dementia diagnoses, Megan combines lived experience with leadership, driving research and system-wide reform.

Karen R Levin

Maroubra

Karen R Levin is a passionate advocate for women and children escaping domestic violence. As Founder of the Equanimity Project, Karen brings extensive business expertise and her own lived experience to create sustainable, community-led solutions for survivors. Beyond frontline support, she mentors more than 100 community and social work placements each year, equipping them with real-world insight and compassion.

Simone Osfield

Miranda

Simone Osfield is a trailblazer in Sutherland Shire community sport. Simone is the first female Deputy Chairman of the Cronulla District Junior Rugby League Competition and works tirelessly to keep the district strong and promote women in sport. She believes team sport can foster a sense of family, teach life lessons and create a sense of belonging.

Yvi Henderson

Monaro

Yvi Henderson, Manager of Cooma Multicultural Centre, has supported more than 900 migrants, refugees and multicultural families across the Monaro. Brenda Norman is an extraordinary community leader, athlete and advocate. In September 2025, Brenda completed the North Channel Swim, a 34.5 km crossing between Ireland and Scotland, considered to be one of the world’s toughest ocean swims. She founded Channel 4 Change and partnered with the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group to use the swim as a platform to raise funds and promote youth mental health awareness.

Shaleigh Lennox ESM has dedicated more than 40 years to the Cooks Hill Surf Life Saving Club, becoming its first female Life Member. Shaleigh served 18 years as a Duty Officer, leading patrol operations and managing emergency incidents. She also coordinated Surf Life Saving’s flood response alongside the SES during the Mid North Coast floods. As Treasurer of the Newcastle Country Women’s Association, she has helped raise over $35,000 for charity.

More than 16 years ago, Linda Pritchard started the Knit2gether group with 6 women to knit items for vulnerable people in the community.
