How to use this guide
This resource provides information on the application and selection process to become a consumer representative in Western Sydney Local Health District (LHD).
We are looking for people to bring the patient, client and carer voice to health care services in Western Sydney LHD and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds across Western Sydney.
- We guide you through a recruitment process and discuss with you how the program works.
- We will ask you about what you want from the program and how much time you want to give.
- We will then work with you to find a team or a project that you want to engage with, depending on your interest and availability.
Our process in 3 steps
Register your interest
- Register your interest by completing our online registration form.
- Complete the survey.
- Attend an interview and orientation session.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you need to:
- be 18 years or older
- live in Western Sydney
- have lived experience as a patient, client, or carer
- commit to the role for at least 12 months
- complete a National Police Check (mandatory)
Not eligible
The following applicants will not be considered:
- All current health care staff.
- Applicants with outstanding or pending complaints.
- Applicants outside Western Sydney Local Health District.
ID and paperwork checks
We check your paperwork and complete an identification check. The paperwork will include:
- a national police check
- your health declaration
- code of conduct
Approval and onboarding
Congratulations, you're now a Western Sydney LHD consumer representative.
You will now:
- complete your training
- be given an ID card
- be provided with a manual and resources.
What consumer representatives do
Consumer representatives help improve how health care services are delivered. Your lived experience and voice can influence healthcare in Western Sydney.
Opportunities
- Joining the Western Sydney LHD Consumer Council
- Being part of the local Consumer Partnership Committees
- Attending forums and workshops
- Participate in health service activities, including:
- interview panels
- health literacy programs
- research projects
- developing patient-friendly resources
- Becoming a consumer ambassador to help ensure care is centred on what matters to individuals.

Consumer Council attendance
As a consumer representative, you are expected to attend a minimum of 3 meetings per year to stay engaged and informed.
