About Radiology LAN 2
Radiology LAN 2 is a collaboration of four teaching facilities across Sydney and a rural NSW site. The network aims to deliver high-quality registrar education and training through shared learning, expert-led teaching and strong cross-facility connections. Training is delivered through a mix of didactic and interactive tutorials run by specialists across a range of radiology fields.
Trainees are directly employed by one of three home hospitals. Most work and training across the five-year program happens at the home hospital. Because these hospitals are part of LAN 2, all registrars are referred to as LAN 2 trainees.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) requires trainees to complete 12 months of their training outside their home hospital. This includes:
- a network rotation at one of the LAN 2 sites
- a 12-week paediatric rotation at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead
- other subspecialty rotations as required by the curriculum.
LAN 2 is managed by the Network Director of Training (NDT) and the Network Education Support Officer (NESO). They work with:
- LAN 2 Directors of Training (DoTs).
- heads of department.
- hospital administrators.
- the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI).
- RANZCR and other partners.
DoTs at each hospital support trainee education and wellbeing and are the first point of contact for training matters.
A Local Governance Committee, with representatives from all LAN 2 sites, oversees network operations. Senior trainees from each site are invited to attend meetings to provide insights and raise issues on behalf of registrars.
A Local Area Network (LAN) is a group of RANZCR-accredited or linked sites working together to train radiology registrars. NSW has three radiology training networks:
- LAN 1
- LAN 2
- LAN 3
All networks deliver structured five-year training programs to support trainees to become qualified RANZCR radiologists.
The three networks also collaborate through the Wide Area Network Teaching Program. This program provides weekly education sessions over a two-year cycle.
As a network trainee, you must meet all RANZCR training requirements and the responsibilities of an NSW Health employee. RANZCR introduced an enhanced curriculum in 2022, which includes updates to training expectations.
