Westmead Hospital
Westmead Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital in Western Sydney. It is part of the largest hospital complex in the southern hemisphere. The hospital has more than 800 beds and is a level 1 trauma centre. It provides care across all major medical specialties and supports a community of more than 1.5 million people. Westmead Hospital is also a major teaching hospital of the University of Sydney.
The Westmead Emergency Department (ED) is one of the busiest in Australia. It sees about 80,000 adult patients each year and manages a wide range of urgent and complex conditions. The ED is supported by 24-hour specialist services, including interventional cardiology, trauma, neurosurgery, stroke, cardiothoracic surgery, dental care and toxicology.
We aim to provide timely and effective emergency care that is compassionate, ethical and safe. We focus on clinical excellence and a supportive environment for patients, families, carers and staff. We are committed to education, research and the ongoing advancement of emergency and critical care medicine.
The ED is located in a new building with:
- six resuscitation beds
- 25 acute beds
- a 24-bed short stay unit
- an eight-bed older person unit
- an eight-bed COVID-19 unit
- a front-of-house treatment space
- an Urgent Care Centre.
Allied health staff, including social workers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, are available seven days a week. Mental health clinical nurse consultants are available 16 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurse practitioners provide cover 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Emergency Department is located upstairs from the adult ED.
When you come to Westmead Emergency, you will be cared for by a team of doctors, nurses and support staff who work around the clock. The department manages a complex and high-acuity caseload, with an annual census of about 80,000 presentations.
The ED is fully accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for advanced training. Our team includes experienced emergency specialists, nurses and allied health professionals.
The Emergency Medicine Research Unit supports high-quality emergency care through education, evidence-based practice and research. Recent redevelopment works include a new Urgent Care Centre, four new resuscitation rooms and an early treatment zone.

Westmead Hospital's emergency department is near the geographic centre of Sydney. We are 30 minutes by train from the Sydney CBD and 10 minutes from Parramatta. The hospital is at a walkable distance from Westmead train station.
We have moved to a new location further north on Hawkesbury Road in the new Westmead Health Precinct building. The Kids Emergency Department is located in the same building on the level above the adult ED.
