Angela shares her breast cancer warning
Angela has been steadfast in maintaining her breast screen appointments over the years, and says it was that routine check that made all the difference.
For Angela, a 60‑year‑old single mother of two, life has always been full.
Regular breast screening, however, was one thing she kept up with, attending every two years.
“I wasn’t worried at all,” she said of her routine appointment, describing the experience as simple, accessible and supported by friendly staff.
Having been to multiple screenings, she didn’t think much of it until a few days after the screen, Angela received a call from the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute asking her to return for further checks.
Despite the uncertainty, Angela reflects on those moments through the lens of the compassionate and care she received.
“I was told I had tumours in my left breast and lymph nodes. I didn’t feel too afraid, mainly because of the conversation I had with Dr Sue Kennedy who provided advice about treatment,” she said.
The proactive breast-screens had detected a tumour in her left breast and lymph nodes.
“I felt like I was in good hands.
“I trusted what I was being told and believed I would be okay.”
Angela continued working throughout her treatment, finding stability in routine.
Support from her family and partner also played a crucial role, alongside connections with others going through similar experiences.
“Connecting with people really helped,” she said.
“You realise you’re not alone.”
Angela connected with a number of support groups, including the Look Good Feel Better, as well as the Pink Finns.
Looking back, Angela is certain early detection made a difference. What was once simply a recommended check is now something she encourages women around her to prioritise.
“If you’re putting it off, just do it,” she said. “It’s worth it for peace of mind.”
Reflecting on her journey, Angela feels grateful for the care and support she received.
“From my first visit to Westmead’s Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre I have felt supported and cared for by people who have so much knowledge and experience in this field. I feel very lucky and blessed.”
