Westmead Hospital’s Orthogeriatric Service has been recognised as one of Australia’s top performers, named a finalist in the prestigious 2025 Australian Golden Hip Awards.
The service was selected by The Hip Fracture Registry as one of the top 10 finalists in the Best Overall Performance category, out of 84 hospitals nationwide.
Dr Cristina Ciobanu, Staff Specialist in Geriatric Medicine, said the recognition is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of the entire Westmead team.

The achievement reflects years of service development and a strong culture of collaboration across disciplines.
“This reflects not only the dedication of our clinicians but also the collective commitment of the broader multidisciplinary team who work tirelessly to improve outcomes for older patients with hip fractures.
“This recognition means a great deal to us, as it highlights the value of collaboration, innovation, and patient-centred care in Orthogeriatrics.
“Our nomination stems from years of service development, close collaboration between geriatricians, orthopaedic surgeons, nurses, Allied Health professionals and support staff, and a shared focus on delivering seamless, evidence-based care,” Dr Ciobanu said.
The Orthogeriatric Service have a close working relationship with their colleagues in the Emergency Department and Anaesthetics.
“From rapid assessment and pain management in the Emergency Department to timely surgical procedures, comprehensive geriatric assessment and rehabilitation planning, our approach ensures patients and their families feel supported at every stage of recovery.
“Our collaboration with the Osteoporosis Team in Westmead Hospital also provides the patients with prompt osteoporosis management,” Dr Ciobanu said.
In 2024, Westmead Hospital treated 200 patients with hip fracture.
The recognition highlights the high standards of care provided by the Orthogeriatric Service at Westmead.
“This acknowledgment underscores the high standards of care our Orthogeriatric service strives to uphold – timely interventions, holistic assessment, and personalised rehabilitation strategies that not only restore mobility but also enhance quality of life.
