About our service
Our Westmead Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service (BIRS) is based at Westmead Hospital. It provides specialised rehabilitation for people with traumatic brain injury.
BIRS offers services at regional and statewide levels. Most patients come from:
- Western Sydney Local Health District
- Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District
- Central West and North Western NSW
Programs and teams
BIRS includes:
- Inpatient program – early recovery through to hospital discharge.
- Community rehabilitation team – providing therapy and support in community settings.
- Research team – advancing knowledge and treatments for brain injury.
Together, these programs support people from coma recovery through to reintegration in their communities.
Inpatient program
The inpatient program is an acute rehabilitation service for people in the early stages of recovery from traumatic brain injury.
Patients in this stage often have:
- very limited independence
- severe cognitive difficulties
- behaviours that may include aggression, impulsivity or disinhibition.
Because the program is designed to support people with complex needs, it also acts as a tertiary referral centre for NSW.
