Our multicultural health team works with communities and health professionals to make sure all Western Sydney LHD services are culturally appropriate and easy to access for people from CALD backgrounds.
This helps improve both health outcomes and the quality of our services.

Our focus areas
Working with CALD communities
We work with CALD communities to find and respond to key health issues for different ethnic groups. This includes improving:
- understanding of health information and risks
- access to health checks, screening and services
- support for programs that help prevent and manage chronic disease.
Working within Western Sydney LHD
We work within our District to build the health system’s ability to meet the needs of CALD consumers and communities.
We also make sure our work meets government policies and reporting requirements.

Multicultural health workers
Our multicultural health workers are based in hospital and community health settings and include multicultural and language and community-specific staff, bilingual counsellors and maternity liaison officers.
Multicultural health workers provide education, information, and liaison when providing health care for CALD communities in Western Sydney LHD.
We also offer health care interpreter services, mental health, and women’s health specific to CALD communities
Multicultural resources
This is a community-led domestic and family violence (DFV) prevention partnership model between our multicultural health team, Western Sydney LHD and people from Afghanistan living in Western Sydney.
The project aims to bring awareness to domestic and family violence and develop culturally appropriate resources that support prevention of domestic and family violence.

This glossary was developed by our multicultural health services team in partnership with NSW Service for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS).
The intention of the resource is to improve experiences of LGBTQIA+ CALD communities in health settings.

Afgan community resources
Understanding Mental Health Support for the Afghan Community in NSW
This video explains mental health support for Afghan refugees in NSW, with stories, services, and advice on how to seek help and build wellbeing.
Transcultural Mental Health Centre
The Transcultural Mental Health Centre works with people from culturally and language diverse communities, health professionals, and partner organisations across NSW to support good mental health.
This service complements the Western Sydney Mental Health Services (hospital and community) and provides enhanced pathways to care for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

GambleAware
This is a statewide service that assists problem gamblers from culturally and language diverse communities living in NSW (and their families) by providing quality and accessible counselling, treatment, and support services.
Confidential assistance is available to gamblers and their families in more than 30 languages at locations across NSW. Assistance includes free telephone counselling, information, advice, and referral and one-to-one counselling in a preferred language.

Multicultural Maternity Liaison Officers
Our Multicultural Liaison Officers (MLO) support and work with women and families from multicultural and diverse backgrounds. The MLO will:
- work with you during your pregnancy, labour and birth.
- provide individual education and support for pregnant women.
- works with your healthcare team to develop a care plan that meets your needs.
- provide you with information on available services and how to access them.

People born overseas are less likely to be smokers; but there are variations to this in individuals from specific cultural or language groups.
We work with community partners and organisations to support CALD groups in smoking and vaping prevention and cessation.

Services and information
The Western Sydney LHD Translation Service provides translation and language advice in more than 120 languages.
Having quality multilingual information helps health services communicate clearly with people from CALD communities. This supports better health outcomes and reduces the risk of miscommunication.

| Translation of clinical information | We translate information that is essential to a patient’s care to help reduce the risk of medical errors. This may include pre- and post-operative instructions, discharge summaries, medical reports, treatment plans and Mental Health Review Tribunal treatment orders. |
| Bilingual consultancy | We provide advice on preparing materials for translation and check if your information is suitable for the target audience. |
| Focus testing | We test translated materials with community members to make sure they are culturally and linguistically appropriate. |
| Research and communication advice | We help you identify your target audience and recommend the best communication format, such as print or audio. |
| Graphic design | We design artwork for multilingual materials ready for print or online publication. |
Quality Assurance
All translations are developed in compliance with the Guidelines for production of Multilingual Health Resources by Area Health Services and in line with the NSW Health Policy on Working with Interpreters
All translations are checked, edited and proofread to ensure the accuracy of translated materials.

The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National) is a language service provided by the Department of Home Affairs for people with limited English proficiency and for agencies and businesses that need to communicate with their non-English speaking clients.
