About our surgical services
We offer comprehensive, networked and high quality surgical perioperative (period surrounding a surgical operation) services in Western Sydney LHD.
Our emergency surgical services are primarily provided at Blacktown and Westmead hospitals. We partner with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to provide surgical services to children at Blacktown Hospital.
We also share our surgery theatres across the Westmead Health Precinct as part of our continued efforts to develop more adult and paediatric surgical services in the Precinct.

Sip Til Send is a pre-surgery initiative that allows patients to sip approved clear liquids until their surgery. It is now a standard practice for surgical patients at our hospitals.
Surgeons and anaesthetists will inform staff of patients who should not Sip Til Send.
The benefits include:
- preventing dehydration
- reducing anxiety and stress
- being a safer option to traditional liquid fasting.
Patients are encouraged to Sip Til Send but are not forced to if they are not feeling well.
- Adults can sip up to 200ml of approved clear liquids.
- Children under 65kgs should sip 3ml per kilogram of body weight per hour.
Note: DO NOT Sip Til Send if you have been asked to avoid all food and drink before surgery. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or nurse for instructions and support.
Approved fluids
The following list of fluids leaves the stomach faster than solid food or thicker, fizzy drinks. They also help prevent dehydration and promotes comfort before and after surgery.
- Water and ice
- Black tea and coffee (no milk)
- Cordial
- Clear apple juice
Note: DO NOT drink fizzy or soft drinks.
Food instructions
- No solid food for 6 hours before surgery.
- Avoid thickened fluids, jellies, broths, lollies, sweets, and chewing gum.

This is for patients attending Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals:
- If your doctor has advised that you need a procedure or surgery, you must complete the PHQ before you can be placed on the waiting list.
The PHQ is an online form that asks for your medical history, medications and a list of any allergies you may have.
To fill out the PHQ you will need a:
- MyServiceNSW account to log in
- code emailed to you by Western Sydney LHD.
Once you have completed and submitted the PHQ online:
- A nurse will review your questionnaire.
- You may be asked to come into the PAC (pre-admission clinic) before your surgery for health checks and tests.
- If you do not need to come to the PAC, you will receive a text message with your surgery or procedure date and time.

- If you have a support person with you, they might be allowed into the ward depending on your condition and recovery process.
Please note:
- When you arrive, there will be some waiting involved before you’re prepped and taken in for your surgery. We advise you to make no other plans for the whole day.
- Sometimes emergencies and unforeseen events can happen in the operating theatre. If this happens, you will be rescheduled for another date as per your surgeon’s advice.
- Our admission staff will try to contact you by telephone to process your admission details.
- If we cannot contact you or if you have not provided your personal details, you will need to go to the hospital’s admissions office before the date of your procedure.

Healthy food and drink options for patients and visitors
Since December 2017, all NSW Health facilities have actively moved toward providing healthier food and drink options for staff, patients and visitors.
One of our first initiatives was to remove all sugar-based drinks with no nutritional value; for example, soft drinks. This initiative is based on the Healthy Food and Drink in NSW Health Facilities for Staff and Visitors Framework
To learn more about eating well, getting active and finding support for you and your family to feel better, stronger and healthier, visit the healthy living website.
Following some types of surgery you may need to be transferred to another hospital within our district so that you can have the most appropriate level of care that you need.
If this needs to happen our care team will speak with you and make the necessary arrangements, including notifying your family and arranging transport between hospitals.
Our hospital staff will check on you often and work with you to make decisions about your care. We encourage you to let us know if there is something you do not understand.
