About our physiotherapy services
Our women's health physiotherapy treatment services focus on:
- maintaining and restoring normal function
- minimising problems with pelvic floor muscle function
- preventing disability and improving quality of life.
In this section, you'll learn more about the different services we offer.
Inpatient services
Our inpatient services are for:
- postoperative (after surgery) women on the Women’s Health Ward
- postnatal women on the maternity ward, either individually or in groups
- babies on the maternity ward and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Inpatients can ask their doctor, midwife or nurse for a referral for physiotherapy to be seen while in hospital.
At Auburn Hospital, our services are available Monday to Friday between 8am to 4pm except public holidays.
At Westmead Hospital, out services are available Monday to Friday between 8am to 4:30pm, except public holidays. When clinically needed we can provide an after-hours physiotherapist.
Outpatient services
Our outpatient services are for:
- women with pelvic floor muscle and incontinence problems
- women with pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain and lower back pain
- pregnant and postnatal women needing hydrotherapy (water therapy).
We assess and treat women's health conditions, including:
- pelvic organ prolapse
- urinary and faecal incontinence
- musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy or after birth
- chronic pelvic pain due to pelvic floor dysfunction.
Accessing outpatient services
To access outpatient services, you must:
- have a referral from their doctor (GP or specialist) or from a hospital inpatient service.
- be over 15 years of age with a Medicare card. If you do not have a Medicare card, a fee will be charged.
If you live outside the Hills, Holroyd or Paramatta local government areas and do not have suitable providers in your area, we can only accept referrals for:
- hydrotherapy classes
- pelvic floor muscle problems
- continence training.
At your appointment
Please arrive on time for your appointments and bring all your scans, tests results and any relevant letters from your doctor. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to your appointment.
If you cannot attend your appointment
Our outpatient services have a high demand. If you cannot attend an appointment, please let us know immediately by calling the physiotherapy department in Auburn or Westmead. If you do not get through, remember to leave a message so we can call you to book in a new appointment time.
Continence and pelvic floor muscle physiotherapy
We support women with incontinence and pelvic floor muscle problems.
You will need a medical referral for this service. Referrals are triaged (prioritised) based on urgency. There is a waiting list for this service, appointments are offered as soon they become available. The team will call you and send a letter to confirm your appointment.
Westmead Hospital has a dedicated Pelvic Floor Unit (PFU) that provides care to women with urinary incontinence (leakage), prolapse and other pelvic floor problems. Learn more about treatment options for pelvic floor problems.
Continence education sessions
Our continence education sessions are conducted by a continence physiotherapist and dietitian. Thes sessions are held every second month on a Thursday from 1.30 to 3.30pm in the Westmead Education Centre on level 2.
You will need a referral from your doctor to attend these sessions. All referrals are assessed by a physiotherapist to make sure you can benefit from the sessions. The team will call you to confirm your appointment for a session.
Hydrotherapy exercise classes
Our hydrotherapy exercise classes are specifically designed for new and expecting mothers. You will need a referral letter and a medical clearance form from your doctor to access this service.
Classes are held on Tuesdays from 11.15am to 12pm at the Physiotherapy Department on Level 1, E Block at Westmead Hospital. For booking enquiries call (02) 8890 6500 between 8am to 4:30pm.
The classes provide a gentle and supportive exercise routine in the water that helps:
- manage pain during pregnancy
- maintain muscle tone and flexibility
- manage pelvic girdle pain and core muscle weakness
- return normal function to your body after childbirth.
The classes are for:
- pregnant women from 16 weeks' gestation (pregnancy) until birth.
- new mothers from 6 weeks after birth, for a total of 6 sessions.
Requirements
You will need a referral letter and a medical clearance form from your doctor. We will add you to the waiting list and contact you when a spot is available.
If you are unable to attend a class, please let us know. We recommend arranging care for your baby, so you can full participate in the class.
What to bring
- Swimmers or bike pants and a t-shirt
- Towel
- Water bottle
- A light snack
Important: Please do not bring shower gel, shampoo, or conditioner.
Guidelines
- New babies are small children are not allowed in the pool area for safety reasons.
- If you miss 2 sessions without letting us know, you will be removed from the classes.
- If you are an outpatient, please call the Westmead Hospital maternity ward at (02) 8890 6161 in the morning to confirm if the class is going ahead.
Cancellations
Sometimes we may cancel a class at short notice due to staffing issues. If you are an outpatient, please call the Westmead Hospital maternity ward at (02) 8890 6161 in the morning to confirm if the class is going ahead.
Postnatal exercises
Our postnatal exercise classes are designed for women in the first week after childbirth.
- The sessions are held in Westmead Hospital in the G Block, level 4 Education Room.
- Classes are held Monday to Friday every week of the year from 9:30 to 10:30am, excluding public holidays.
- Classes may be cancelled at short notice, due to staffing issues. On the morning of your scheduled class, call the maternity ward at (02) 8890 6161 to confirm if the class is going ahead.
