Registration cost changes in 2025
Motor Vehicle Tax (MVT) has been incorrectly calculated for some registrations in previous years. Here we explain why some customers are paying different costs in 2025.
Motor Vehicle Taxation (MVT) and how it affects the cost of registration
The cost of registration in NSW includes MVT and a registration fee/heavy vehicle registration charge.
MVT depends on the vehicle type, usage, unladen mass and any concessions that apply as per MVT legislation.
Why MVT charges were incorrectly calculated
Some vehicles were previously charged the wrong MVT as their classification was recorded incorrectly in Transport’s systems.
This was corrected on 1 January 2025. As a result, some customers will see a higher or lower registration renewal costs in 2025.
The latest registration renewal notices for all vehicles from 1 January 2025 show the correct amount.
Transport apologises for any inconvenience caused and has updated registration calculation systems to ensure charges are correct.
Vehicles that have higher registration costs from January 2025
The cost increases have mostly affected owners of four-wheel drive vehicles such as Toyota LandCruisers with business use. These vehicles were previously categorised as a ‘motor lorry’ which meant that the MVT was much less than it should have been.
Although these customers have been undercharged in previous years, they will not be asked to repay any undercharged amounts.
To help manage the increased cost customers can choose half yearly registration renewal. To find out more see short term vehicle registration.
