Registering a brand new light vehicle
When you buy a new vehicle, you can register the vehicle at a service centre or the motor dealer can organise the registration on your behalf.
Organising the paperwork
You or the motor dealer will need to complete an Application for Registration.
If you don’t hold a current driver licence or have a vehicle registered in your name you will need to apply for a customer number first.
Vehicle Inspection
In most cases an AUVIS inspection (blue slip) is not required for a new light vehicles.
The application form should be completed with details about the vehicle and must include the mandatory vehicle details listed below. Details can be obtained from the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) entry for the vehicle, the paperwork provided by the motor dealer and on the vehicle itself.
Mandatory details that must be provided with all new registration applications if applicable to your vehicle:
- Proof of identity
- Application for Registration form 1009
- Proof of registration entitlement
- RAV entry
- Compulsory Third Party (CTP) (not trailers)

If a motor dealer is registering the vehicle on your behalf, an AUVIS inspection is not usually required, and they
will provide the relevant details.
Some new vehicles will need an AUVIS inspection:
- if there are important vehicle details missing from the application for registration
- heavy vehicles and trailers. For more details see Safety checks and vehicle inspections
- vehicles which have been registered before, in NSW or elsewhere. For more details see Registering a used or secondhand vehicle
- vehicles which are over 2 years old (refer to the ‘build date’ on the RAV entry)
- imported, modified or written off vehicles
- vehicles where the RAV entry does not show a ‘type approval’
CTP insurance
All new vehicles require CTP insurance ('greenslip') except for trailers and caravans.
For light vehicles, the CTP policy must be for 12 months and be issued by a NSW insurance provider. You can compare CTP quotes using the green slip calculator.
If a motor dealer is registering the vehicle, they will likely organise CTP insurance at the same time as the registration.
