Group Training Organisation pre-apprenticeship and pre-traineeship program

As part of the NSW Skills Plan 2024–28: Building Skills and Shaping Success, 6 critical skills areas have been identified as top priorities to meet growing demand, address workforce shortages and respond to rapid industry changes.

• Construction – infrastructure and housing
• Net Zero and energy transition
• Digital and cyber
• Care and support economy
• Agriculture and agrifood
• Advanced manufacturing.

Employers hosting students, and who subsequently take on the apprentice or trainee see several benefits: 

• The ability to showcase their business as an employer of choice to a prospective talent pool.
• Opportunity to meet immediate talent and skills needs.
• Access to:
  • a talent pool of ‘screened’ individuals interested in pursuing a career in the industry, and who have demonstrated their suitability whilst on work experience
  • students who have chosen to pursue further pathways in the industry and are engaged, as they have had the opportunity to explore the industry
  • students who have already completed 3 to 6 units of competency in the qualification, therefore reducing the time in studies whilst employed as an apprentice or trainee.
• A strong complement to their existing talent attraction strategy. 

Participants must:  

• have left school
• be 15 years of age or older
• meet the Smart and Skilled student eligibility criteria to participate in the training. 
   

Participation in a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship training program allows participants to:  

• learn about vocational choices
• access support and advice from a GTO and partner provider about which pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship is suitable
• start training and develop pre-employment skills to be job ready
• gain real-world workplace experience
• receive mentoring and assistance where needed
• gain nationally recognised training in 3 to 6 units of competency which can be credited towards a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification
• transition into a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification to pursue a career a chosen industry.
