Group Training Organisation pre-apprenticeship and pre-traineeship program

The Group Training Organisation pre-apprenticeship and pre-traineeship program (the program) aims to support Group Training Organisations (GTOs) across NSW to deliver targeted pre-apprenticeship and pre-traineeship training programs, designed to equip participants with the skills, experience, and guidance needed to transition into a full-time apprenticeships or traineeships with host employers.
About the program
Participation in a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship training program allows participants to:
- learn about vocational pathways and career options
- access support and advice from a GTO and partner provider to explore which pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship are suitable
- start training and develop pre-employment skills to be job ready
- participate in industry relevant work experience
- receive mentoring and assistance where needed
- gain nationally recognised training in 3 to 6 units of competency which can be credited towards a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification
- transition into a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification to pursue a career in a chosen industry.
The program aims to:
- create a supportive pathway for students to gain insight to the formal training and on the job requirements of an apprenticeships or traineeships in:
- one of the 6 critical skills areas identified in the NSW Skills Plan 2024–28: Building Skills and Shaping Success
- other sectors with demonstrated skill need
- increase the uptake, engagement and retention in NSW.

- students who have already completed 3 to 6 units of competency in the qualification, therefore reducing the time in studies whilst employed as an apprentice or trainee.

Participants
Participants must:
- have left school
- be 15 years of age or older
- meet the Smart and Skilled student eligibility criteria to participate in the training.

- access support and advice from a GTO and partner provider about which pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship is suitable
- start training and develop pre-employment skills to be job ready
- gain real-world workplace experience
- receive mentoring and assistance where needed
- gain nationally recognised training in 3 to 6 units of competency which can be credited towards a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification
- transition into a full apprenticeship or traineeship qualification to pursue a career a chosen industry.
