Building an inclusive and safe workplace
Enhancing your workplace practices and flexibility can assist all employees, including uplifting the participation and retention of apprentices and trainees, as well as women within your organisation.
Creating a safe and supportive workplace will help you retain them for the long term.
There are 2 things you can do as an employer to retain tradeswomen:
- Have processes in place to overcome gender bias.
- Create a supportive workplace culture.
This should include:
- supporting flexible working
- providing women with appropriate equipment and facilities on worksites
- planning, promoting and enforcing gender inclusive workplace policies
- seeking regular feedback from women employees
- providing tradeswomen in your business mentorship and networking opportunities
- ensuring equal opportunities for women to further their career.

Free training for supervisors
Supervisors across industry and the NSW public sector are invited to access free training sessions to upskill to support women in trades. All supervisors are eligible.
About the training
The training aims to equip supervisors leading diverse teams with the skills to confidently:
- apply inclusive supervision practices
- build psychologically safe environments
- adapt communication styles
- develop workplace mentoring, coaching and actions plan
- support and retain women in their team.
Training delivery
Delivered by a Registered Training Organisation.
Duration: 4 days
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.
Cost: fully funded.
Venue: flexible training options are available, choose between online or blended learning.
(Department of Education Office or external training room).
Training benefits
Taking part benefits your organisation by:
- strengthening a positive, inclusive workplaces that supports women in trades
- addressing common barriers faced by women in trades
- supporting the progression and retention of women in trades.
Supervisors will receive 2 statements of attainment:
- Lead and facilitate a team
- Mentor in the workplace.
