Sample work English Studies Year 12: We are Australians – narrative writing
See sample narrative responses, outcomes and criteria for assessment. Samples are at different grade levels.
Task
Students draft and edit a narrative that has as its focus an image of the word 'Aussie' written on the beach in seaweed.
Context
During the study of this module, students develop an awareness of complex aspects of Australian citizenship, community and cultural identity. They develop language skills appropriate to participating in discussion and decision-making about these matters and conducting their lives as citizens and members of communities. They engage with and critique literary texts that present the diversity of cultures, peoples, perspectives and voices that contribute to Australian society. Students develop their understanding of the power of language to communicate ideas effectively, and develop their ability to use language imaginatively, expressively and purposefully.
A student:
ES12-4 composes proficient texts in different forms
ES12-6 uses appropriate strategies to compose texts for different modes, media audiences, contexts and purposes
ES12-7 represents own ideas in critical, interpretive and imaginative texts
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- explore ideas about Australian identity imaginatively and incorporate the image into a narrative
- develop ideas coherently and appropriately to the narrative form
- express ideas clearly
- demonstrate control of language.
The following marking scheme shows one approach to assigning a value to a student's work.
| A student: | Range |
|---|---|
| 9–10 |
| 7–8 |
| 5–6 |
| 3–4 |
| 1–2 |

Grade B
Quinn
This response demonstrates a sound understanding of narrative structure as it attempts to explore the concept of Australian identity through the imaginative incorporation of the image. While the figurative language is at times clichéd, there is evidence of methodically ‘crafting’ the story with the use of appropriate visual description to engage the reader. This response demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard at the end of the course.
Grade E
Stacey
This response demonstrates an elementary connection with the sense of identity and incorporates the image as an afterthought. There is limited control of language and narrative form, and elementary understanding of audience. This response would benefit from closer editing and a greater focus on close description rather than superficial narrative. This response demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade E standard at the end of the course.
