2016 Automotive HSC exam papers
Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the exam paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.
Marking feedback

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future exams. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written exam
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- correctly identifying the tool shown (Q16a)
- identifying he advantages of using a six point star shaped tool (Q16b)
- understanding the importance of the correct replacement of an electrical component (Q17a)
- describing procedures to remove and replace an automotive battery (Q17b)
- explaining the operation of the electronic control system (Q18b)
- listing strategies to communicate with customers from a non-English speaking background (Q19)
- providing relevant examples of hazards and risks (Q20)
- correctly linking the various areas of inspection with the possible problems (Q21a)
- identifying information required prior to ordering specific parts (Q21b).
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- providing a logical sequence of the steps required to remove a damaged bolt (Q16c)
- considering safe work practices when replacing an automotive battery (Q17b)
- explaining the benefits of a sealed automotive battery (Q17c)
- linking the operation of the engine management system and the ratio of the fuel being determined by air mass and engine speed (Q18b)
- describing the difference between a hazard and a risk (Q20)
- identifying the specialised tools necessary for the inspection areas identified (Q21c).
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- identifying the majority of components in an automotive cooling system
- listing the causes of vehicle engine overheat
- understanding the causes of coolant leaks.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- identifying possible internal and external locations of coolant leakage
- describing cooling system specific diagnostic tools and how they are used to locate coolant leaks
- providing a logical step-by-step procedure for locating coolant leaks
- providing details of safety requirements when working on cooling systems.
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- explaining why alternative fuels are becoming popular
- understanding the impact alternative fuels have on the environment
- linking these impacts to a variety of automotive industry sectors.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- reading the question carefully to provide a detailed explanation on the automotive industry rather than the environment
- providing a detailed response.
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- correctly identifying the tool shown (Q16a)
- identifying the advantages of using a six point star shaped tool (Q16b)
- understanding the importance of the correct replacement of an electrical component (Q17a)

- understanding the impact alternative fuels have on the environment
- linking these impacts to a variety of automotive industry sectors.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- reading the question carefully to provide a detailed explanation about the automotive industry rather than the environment
