Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on practical examination
Monologue
Students should:
- read the questions in both Chinese and English in order to fully understand the meaning
- include sufficient information to fully address the topic
- provide convincing evidence or examples to support an argument
- avoid using only a list of examples and not supporting the argument in the response
- avoid using pre-prepared responses that do not answer the questions.
In better responses, students were able to:
- address the question effectively with logically developed argument supported by relevant evidence
- develop their argument in a structured way, by including an opening statement, body, and conclusion
- use conjunctions correctly to link various points of view
- present their monologue confidently and fluently using a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structure
- demonstrate a high level of language accuracy.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- read the questions carefully and address all aspects in response
- demonstrate understanding of the Chinese quotes by using own words or paraphrasing
- explain the quotes and their significance rather than just translate them
- have knowledge of the whole text as well as the extracts set for study.
In better responses, students were able to:
- address all aspects of the question fully
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the scenes in the question and the whole prescribed text
- explain the significance of Chinese quotes in the context using their own words
- identify and explain the role of the council officers (Q1(b))
- display a thorough understanding of Lao Ye’s personality with relevant reference to the text (Q1(c))
- provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of change on society (Q1(d)).
Areas for students to improve include:
- addressing all parts of the question by providing relevant information and ideas
- demonstrating a thorough knowledge of the extracts set for study aa well as the whole prescribed text.
Students should:
- read the task carefully and address all aspects fully
- write in the type of text as specified in the question
- show their knowledge of the chosen extract and other relevant parts of the film when responding to question
- support their response with evidence from the text.
In better responses, students were able to:
- address all parts of the question and write in the type of text of a letter
- demonstrate their knowledge of the chosen extract and other relevant parts of the film
- compose a letter from the perspective of DaFan reflecting on the relationship with her mother
- display a good control of language and grammatical structures support their response with relevant references to the appropriate extracts set for study and the whole text.
Areas for students to improve include:
- being familiar with all the characters and plot of the film
- writing in Chinese from the perspective of any of the characters in the film
- demonstrating in their response knowledge of the extracts set for study and the whole text
- being creative whilst keeping within the confines of the requirements of the question.
Students should:
- read the questions carefully and address all aspects
- write in the relevant type of text
- use appropriate register throughout the script of a speech
- ensure that the content of their response is relevant to the question
- plan and sequence their response coherently.
In better responses, students were able to:
- produce a coherent argument and support their ideas with appropriate examples
- use a variety of vocabulary and language structures to express ideas
- structure and sequence their response effectively.
Areas for students to improve include:
- writing using appropriate conventions of the type of text of a script for a speech
- developing a coherent, organised and well-structured the argument
- proofreading the response for grammatical and lexical accuracy.
