Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the exam paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.
Marking feedback
Select from the sections below to view feedback from HSC markers about how students performed in this year’s exam.
Use the feedback to guide preparation for future exams. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on oral exam
Students should:
- use the seven minutes of preparation time to prepare points that can be used to deliver a logical and coherent monologue
- state the question to which they are responding
- speak for approximately three minutes
- address all parts of the question
- adopt a point of view or stance and provide examples that link their argument to the question
- provide relevant examples beyond their personal experience
- prepare a response based on the requirements of the question
- use a variety of vocabulary, sentence structures and expressions which are suitable to the issue addressed in the question
- provide a conclusion that is not a repetition of the introduction.
In better responses, students were able to:
- communicate ideas and information confidently and fluently, using authentic language features, and intonation, for example, 像茶壶里煮饺子,装得进去倒不出来 (Q1)
- present coherent and well-structured arguments with a clear introduction and conclusion, and maintain a logical flow of ideas
- provide a concise summary of their main argument(s) in the conclusion
- provide both analysis and relevant examples in their response, rather than just listing opinions and ideas, for example, 斯坦福大学的报告、李子柒利用科技成为网红、迈克•乔丹的篮球成就
- provide different types of evidence to support their point of view, for example, statistics, comparisons, anecdotes
- express complex ideas with a range of vocabulary and sentence structures, for example, 望子成龙、望女成凤、出人头地、坚韧不拔、因材施教、日新月异、满腹经纶、高分低能、吃苦耐劳、是金子总会发光的、吃得苦中苦,方为人上人、知识就是力量、学而不思则罔、条条大路通罗马、一分耕耘一分收获、多个朋友多条路
- demonstrate an understanding of grammatical requirements.
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing a well-structured and cohesive response, including an introduction and conclusion
- demonstrating understanding of the question, for example, ‘有好工作’ is different from ‘成功’
- providing appropriate statistics and examples to support the argument
- providing a response based on the requirements of the question and avoid using pre-prepared material that may be irrelevant to the question
- organising information in a logical and sequential manner
- incorporating a range of sentence structures.
Feedback on written exam
Part A
Students should:
- read the whole extract before attempting to answer the questions
- read the questions carefully and address all aspects in their response
- explain the quotes given in Chinese and their significance in the relevant context, rather than just providing a translation
- demonstrate knowledge of all the extracts for study and the whole prescribed text where required
- respond in English using their own words
- use the lines given as an indication of the length of response required.
In better responses, students were able to:
- identify the reasons behind Ju Ran’s mother’s exclamation (Q1a)
- explain how the director uses film techniques to portray the strained relationship between Ju Ran and his mother (Q1b)
- demonstrate a deep understanding of the extent of Ju Ran’s father’s authority within the family, and support this with evidence from the text (Q1c)
- analyse how the extract sheds light on Huang Jingjing’s personality, making references to the text (Q1d)
- demonstrate understanding of how Ju Ran’s lack of responsibility is conveyed in the relevant extracts, providing references from the text (Q1e).
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading the questions carefully
- referring specifically to Extract 2 rather than to other extracts (Q1e)
- supporting their argument with detailed references to the relevant extracts (Q1e).
Part B
Students should:
- read the question carefully and address all parts in their response
- write in the type of text specified in the question
- address the specified context, purpose and audience of the question
- write from a particular perspective as required by the question
- demonstrate knowledge of the chosen extract and other relevant parts of the text when responding to the question
- support their response with evidence from the text
- use their own words in the response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide a thorough reflection and sequence ideas effectively
- write an articulated response using a wide range of expressions, for example, 点燃了我的斗志、永不言输、愈挫愈勇、 锲而不舍、奋斗、 毅力、价值观
- maintain a high level of accuracy in grammar and character writing.
Areas for students to improve include:
- referring to the given extract and focusing on Ms Sa’s words in this extract
- avoiding merely retelling the story without offering reflection.
Students should:
- address all aspects of the question
- write in the relevant text type as specified in the question
- use appropriate register consistently throughout the response
- ensure that the content of the response is relevant to the question
- plan and sequence the response to ensure it is coherent
- demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary, expressions and where relevant, idiomatic language related to the issues prescribed for study
- support their argument, point of view or opinion with relevant ideas and information
- manipulate the language authentically and creatively with correct use of grammar and syntax to meet the requirements of the task
- use the dictionary to choose the appropriate word, expression or phrase for the context, purpose, and audience of the question
- ensure enough time to proofread and edit work.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present the argument logically and sequentially, with a clear introduction and an insightful conclusion
- use a range of expressions, for example, 脱颖而出、根深蒂固、 日新月异、金榜题名、喝西北风、只要功夫深、铁杵磨成针、创业、专利、主播、接地气、荣华富贵, 被捧成神一样
- support their arguments with relevant examples to effectively address the question.
Areas for students to improve include:
- addressing the requirements of the question and avoid using pre-prepared responses that may not suit the question
- linking the argument and examples back to the question
- using a wide range of vocabulary to avoid repetition
- proofreading their response to ensure grammatical and lexical accuracy.
