Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.
HSC marking feedback
Select from the link(s) below to view feedback about how students performed in this year’s examination.
Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- listen to the whole question, rather than using cue words in the questions to prepare responses which were on the topic but did not answer the question
- develop their skills in manipulating content in order to answer the actual questions posed by the examiners
- use the correct Indonesian language, for example, problems arose in the use of ketika and other words to translate ‘when’; the use of kami versus kita; confusion as to when to use siapa, yang and bahwa; the use of saja and its correct positioning in the sentence
- imitate good pronunciation models. Commonly mispronounced words include karena, dan, kadang-kadang and favorit.
In better responses, students were able to:
- understand all the examiner’s questions
- use a wide range of vocabulary across a range of topics
- avoid repetition of vocabulary and ideas
- respond to questions in depth, for example, explaining and even justifying responses
- incorporate object focus construction, both first and third person, in a natural way
- respond to the ‘less predictable’/unexpected questions in an authentic way
- use a range of structures, for example, baik…maupun, walaupun demikian, di satu pihak … di pihak yang lain, mudah-mudahan
- demonstrate accurate intonation and pronunciation
- use correct word order and affixation (for example, noun and verb forms, correct choice of me~or ber~ prefixes).
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- address the key words in order to better understand how to approach the range of examination questions, for example, Question 10 (a) specifically asks for a summary, hence the response needs to provide a concise dot point summary that does not include numerous examples and explanations to support each dot point
- read the questions carefully and answer the specific question that is asked, for example, Question 7 asks about the father's perspective and not Febi's perspective; Question 10 (d) asks about the author's feelings about Pak Nyoman's decision to move, and not how Pak Nyoman felt about the move
- revise vocabulary , such as time, time indicators, days of the week and so on as part of their preparation for the exam.
In better responses, students were able to:
- identify the difference in meaning between lantai dua and dua lantai (Q3)
- identify the features of the apartment and link that to the needs and preferences of the male speaker (Q3)
- explain that Sri was concerned with the logistics of getting to venue safely to see the dance performance (Q5)
- use supporting evidence to explain and demonstrate to what extent Febi's father thought that she would be a suitable candidate for the cooking competition (Q7)
- explain reasons for Hadi’s dilemma, such as concerns with job vacancy in the area of his passion and potential future at his current employment (Q8)
- recognise the meaning of the following vocabulary: berkemah (Q1), lusa (Q2), lantai dua, halte bis (Q3), pandangan hidup (Q4), pede, membagi waktu (Q7), perusahaan (Q8).
Part A
In better responses, students were able to:
- identify that the tourist had fallen victim to a scam (Q9 (d))
- concisely express the types of changes depicted in paragraph one (Q10a)
- identify language techniques (for example, simile and rhetorical questions) used to convey the author’s feelings about Pak Nyoman’s move to the city (Q10 (e))
- recognise the meaning of the following vocabulary: berkaki telanjang, terpencil (Q9), warisan, nenek moyang, keramat, tidak kerasan lagi (Q10).
Part B
In better responses, students were able to:
- use the correct text type – diary
- demonstrate correct affixation, particularly with seimbang/keseimbangan/menyeimbang and nasihat/menasihati/dinasihat
- organise their ideas and structure their writing well with paragraphs and little repetition
- demonstrate a good understanding of the stimulus text and address all relevant issues in some depth
- use reflective language effectively to give their opinion
- discuss the issues of balancing their time, their teachers and their parent’s expectations in some depth
- refer to the content of Sam’s blog without borrowing whole phrases or sentences from it.
