Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- manage their time well during the exam to ensure that they finish all questions in the paper
- write legibly
- ensure their responses always address the purpose, context and audience of the question
- read questions carefully and analyse the intent of the question, addressing all key words in detail in their responses. For example, in Q1 (c), students need to correctly identify the two speakers’ attitudes, adequately supporting both attitudes with reference to content and language
- support their opinions with a wide variety of relevant examples and/or quotes as evidence. These examples should be integrated into the text, with ideas flowing well from one to the next
- know the plot of prescribed texts in detail. They must also be able to identify and explain relevant literary techniques (for example, irony and simile).
In better responses, students were able to:
- give complete responses, with relevant information (Q1)
- synthesise both texts, rather than responding based on general knowledge (Q2)
- incorporate their points into an authentic oral presentation, using correct conventions for the text type (for example, opening and closing their presentation appropriately) (Q2)
- explain the internal conflict of Dr Subianto, supporting it with quotes and reference to the text (Q3)
- know the plot of the prescribed texts in detail (Q4)
- explain the irony in Pulang (Q4)
- describe the imagery of snow as a metaphor for her hardship/suffering and the danger of her situation (Q4)
- analyse techniques and providing appropriate quotes to support their ideas (Q4)
- give real and clear examples to support their ideas, rather than just repackaging information from the text (Q5)
- address most of the issues in the text, rather than just 1-2 topics from the text (Q5)
- address all key aspects of the question, for example, 'socio-economic factors', giving a detailed response, with a variety of relevant examples as supporting evidence (Q6)
- use appropriate text conventions, for example the correct register for writing to grandparents (Q7).
