Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Feedback on written examination
Part A
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column and transcribe their answer on to the allocated lines
- respond in English
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- refer to content and language if required by the question, and give examples from the text to support their response
- address the key words in the question, for example, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘justify’, ‘analyse’ and provide relevant responses
- have knowledge of the prescribed themes and the related issues as well as the prescribed texts for study.
In better responses, students were able to:
- identify the specific information from the text needed for the answer
- support their answer with relevant information from the text
- explain how both content and language techniques are used to promote Indonesia, for example, the use of simile and personification as well as the use of imperatives such as ‘bayangkan’ to engage the listener (Q1c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- being familiar with various language techniques and the effects on audience
- listening for specific details
- providing comprehensive responses with relevant details.
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian as indicated in the question
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the prescribed themes and the related issues raised in the texts
- support their response with appropriate examples and textual references
- ensure their response provides all the relevant information to fully answer the question
- manipulate the language authentically according to the context, purpose and audience of the question
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- adhere to the suggested number of words and/or characters.
In better responses, students were able to:
- write in the correct text type, and use language that is most suitable for the text type of an article
- synthesise the information from both texts
- compare the similarities and contrast the differences of all aspects of the issue(s) raised in both texts.
Areas for students to improve include:
- listening for details from both texts in order to produce a comprehensive article
- manipulating language to engage the audience, for example, the use of rhetoric, anecdotes or quotes.
Part A
Students should:
- respond in either English or Indonesian as required by the question
- address all parts of the question
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate their response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the prescribed texts, themes and prescribed issues
- use appropriate textual references to support their ideas and point(s) of view
- structure and sequence information and ideas in a coherent and logical manner
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures
- avoid giving a literal translation of text(s) as part of the response
- use only the lines allocated for the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- explain the changes in the character as shown in the extract (Q3a)
- describe each character’s point of view and the differences between them (Q3b)
- describe the daughter’s feelings as depicted in the extract (Q3c)
- explain the son’s reaction as well as his attitude towards his father by analysing the language techniques used (Q3d)
- discuss the different views of each character in the prescribed text (Q4)
- identify and analyse the language techniques used in the prescribed text (Q4).
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing clear and comprehensive responses supported with relevant details from the extract (Q3)
- describing both characters’ point of view in their response (Q3b)
- stating the son’s reaction as well as his attitude in their response (Q3d)
- discussing all three characters’ attitude in their response (Q4)
- using appropriate textual references to support their analysis of the prescribed text (Q4).
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian only
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- take a stance on the issue(s) raised in the text, and substantiate a point of view with evidence from the text
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the issue(s) raised in the text
- provide a convincing argument supported by detailed examples
- use features and language appropriate for the text type used in an article for a teenage magazine.
Areas for students to improve include:
- addressing the issue(s) raised in the stimulus text
- providing relevant examples to support their argument
- manipulating language to engage the audience using anecdotes, rhetoric or quotes.
Students should:
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- maintain appropriate register
- write on the issue(s) addressed in the question
- demonstrate originality in the development and sequence of information and ideas
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and language structures suitable to the issue(s) discussed in their response
- adhere to the word and/or character limit of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- show perceptive understanding of the issue(s) contained in the question
- discuss the changes that make the country more appealing now compared to before (Q6)
- discuss the way(s) technology can be used to benefit the environment (Q7)
- use language and features appropriate to the text type of an essay, including introductions, topic-comment sentences and a conclusion.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using a range of sophisticated connectors to assist in the presentation of their ideas
- manipulating language to express ideas and convey information clearly
- using a wider range of ideas in the response.
