Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written examination
Part A
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column and transcribe their answer on to the allocated lines
- respond in English
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- refer to content and language if required by the question, and give examples from the text to support their response
- address the key words in the question, for example, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘justify’, ‘analyse’ and provide relevant responses
- have knowledge of the prescribed themes and the related issues as well as the prescribed texts for study.
In better responses, students were able to:
- understand the questions and answer appropriately and accurately
- identify the specific details from the text relevant to the answer
- explain the language features and techniques used to convince the father supported with relevant examples (c), for example the language techniques of hyperbole and onomatopoeia
- provide comprehensive responses with relevant details.
Areas for students to improve include:
- being familiar with various language techniques and being able to explain their effects
- listening for specific details
- providing comprehensive responses with relevant and accurate details.
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian as indicated in the question
- use their own words and not translate segments of the text as part of their response
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the prescribed themes and the related issues raised in the texts
- support their response with appropriate examples and textual references
- ensure their response provides all the relevant information to fully answer the question
- manipulate the language authentically according to the context, purpose and audience of the question
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- adhere to the suggested number of words and/or characters.
In better responses, students were able to:
- synthesise the information from both texts
- compare and contrast all aspects of the issue raised in both texts
- write in the correct text type and use language that is appropriate for the text type, context and audience, that is, a report for a local Indonesian magazine.
Areas for students to improve include:
- listening for details from both texts
- using features and language appropriate for a report
- using correct language structures and a variety of vocabulary to compare and contrast.
Part A
Students should:
- respond in either English or Indonesian as required by the question
- address all parts of the question
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate their response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the prescribed texts, themes and prescribed issues
- use appropriate textual references to support their ideas and point(s) of view
- structure and sequence information and ideas in a coherent and logical manner
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures
- avoid giving a literal translation of text(s) as part of the response
- use only the lines allocated for the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- describe Ben’s Perfecto correctly (Q3a)
- describe the character in the short story who has everything (Q3b)
- explain the significance of the coffee cards and what they symbolise in the short story (Q3c)
- explain the significance of Pak Seno’s role in changing Ben’s philosophy of life (Q3d)
- identify and discuss the contrast between tradition and modernity in the prescribed text (Q4)
- identify and analyse the language techniques used in the prescribed text (Q4).
Areas for students to improve include:
- being familiar with the main plot and the significant details in the prescribed text (Q3 and Q4)
- providing clear and comprehensive responses supported with relevant details from the prescribed text (Q3)
- being familiar with the characters and their relationship with each other (Q3d)
- understanding how tradition and modernity are represented in the prescribed text (Q4)
- using appropriate textual references to support their analysis of the prescribed text (Q4).
Part B
Students should:
- respond in Indonesian only
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- take a stance on the issue(s) raised in the text and substantiate a point of view with evidence from the text
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and appropriate language structures.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the issues raised in the text
- provide a convincing argument supported by real examples
- demonstrate an excellent control of vocabulary and language structures
- use features and language appropriate for the text type and the context, that is, a blog post.
Areas for students to improve include:
- addressing the issue(s) raised in the stimulus text
- providing relevant examples to support the argument
- using correct language structures and a variety of vocabulary to express ideas.
Students should:
- apply the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- maintain appropriate register
- write on the issue(s) addressed in the question
- demonstrate originality in the development and sequence of information and ideas
- demonstrate control of vocabulary and language structures suitable to the issue(s) discussed in their response
- adhere to the word and/or character limit of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- show perceptive understanding of the contemporary issue(s) (Q6)
- discuss the topic of Indonesia as a global power in the world supported by relevant examples (Q6)
- use features and language appropriate for the text type and the context, that is, a speech competition organised by the Indonesian Embassy.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using appropriate language for the text type, that is, a speech
- manipulating language to engage the audience
- using a wider range of ideas in the response.
