Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- use the Candidates’ Notes column to make notes and ensure all relevant information is incorporated into the final response
- demonstrate a clear understanding of context, purpose and audience in their responses
- infer points of view, opinion and attitudes from texts
- recognise, analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of features in texts
- demonstrate control of a range of language structures and vocabulary in Korean
- respond within the word limit indicated in the question.
Students should expect:
- a variety of aural texts and question types with varying difficulty
- questions that require responses that are beyond a literal translation
- questions that require students to analyse, explain, justify, infer and draw conclusions
- questions that require students to compare and contrast aspects of texts
- to use textual cues and their understanding of text structure to interpret meaning
- to apply knowledge of linguistic and stylistic features to infer meaning in texts
- to express a point of view when responding to texts
- to adapt linguistic features to reflect on, persuade, convince or discuss when responding to texts.
Students can prepare for this examination by:
- familiarising themselves with the themes and issues in the syllabus
- practising past HSC examination papers within a time limit
- engaging with a variety of texts that relate to syllabus topics, issues, perspectives, prescribed themes and issues
- studying the prescribed texts very well
- practising writing different text types
- learning expressions that show knowledge of cause and effect
- practising the use of various sentence structures and vocabulary in expressing opinion, justifying points of view and/or drawing conclusions.
In better responses, students were able to:
- summarise and/or synthesise information and ideas
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the main ideas and the specific details in aural texts
- present ideas and information for a particular purpose, context and audience
- synthesise ideas and information in a text to justify views and opinions
- explain how language techniques are used in the text to convey meaning
- provide ample examples from text to support their responses.
In the better responses, students were able to:
- use a variety of relevant ideas to convey meaning
- explain thoroughly what certain features/expressions meant in a text
- make excellent and detailed reference to the film, short story and poem
- infer points of view, values, attitudes and emotions from texts
- demonstrate a perceptive understanding of the message of a text (Q3)
- use a variety of textual references in their responses
- compare how the director of a film and author of a short story express a particular issue (Q4)
- respond to texts perceptively by creating a text with a specific purpose, audience and context (Q5).
In better responses, students were able to:
- use a variety of relevant ideas to express/discuss opinions
- elaborate on ideas and supported them with a variety of examples
- structure their responses in a coherent manner by sequencing ideas and information logically
- use a variety of language structures and vocabulary creatively
- use descriptive and persuasive language by manipulating sentence structures and expressions and using a variety of vocabulary
- demonstrate excellent control of language structures, grammar and spelling.
