Section I – Responding to texts
Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- choose a topic for Personal Investigation that is related to one of the issues set for study
- ensure they support their research using relevant and quality texts and sources
- discuss and substantiate a point of view effectively by providing evidence from their research
- reflect on their research findings to help them express opinions or develop new perceptions about their Personal Investigation
- reflect on their research findings to indicate how the research helped them to express opinion/change opinion or develop a new perception about the issue related to the Personal Investigation
- manipulate language to respond in a coherent and logical way to the questions asked
- use a variety of relevant vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and expressions
- avoid responding with pre-prepared responses that do not address the question asked.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate detailed understanding of the issue chosen for the Personal Investigation
- speak fluently and confidently, providing logical and well-structured responses to questions
- support and substantiate a point of view effectively with appropriate, relevant and detailed references to the texts studied
- respond using a high level of grammatical accuracy, sophisticated vocabulary and expressions throughout the interview, for example, … 정보 수집을 위해 신문을 읽는 한편 인터넷 검색도 열심히 했습니다. 그 의견은 전혀 고려할 여지가 없는
- speak clearly using accurate pronunciation and intonation.
Areas for students to improve include:
- demonstrating detailed understanding of the topic chosen for the Personal Investigation by using the reflective words, for example, 그 정보를 반영해서 … 수집한 자료를 효과적으로 분석하고 적용해서...
- presenting their own opinion(s) about the researched topic and reliability of the texts
- supporting and substantiating a consistent point of view effectively throughout the interview
- responding using a high level of grammatical accuracy, vocabulary and authentic expressions as well throughout the oral examination
- avoiding long pauses when speaking.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- respond in English or Korean as required by the question
- demonstrate their understanding of the issue(s) raised in the text
- include all relevant details and support their response with reference to the text
- use appropriate vocabulary, expressions and language to address the style of writing required by the question
- use appropriate register when responding in Korean
- respond within the required word and/or character limit
- respond to the number of texts referred to in the question
- apply the conventions of the text type.
In better responses, students were able to:
- summarise the text by including the main points within the word limit (Q1)
- respond to both texts personally and critically, whilst demonstrating excellent control of a range of Korean structures and vocabulary. For example, 혁신적인 시도, 전통, 자유자재로, 정통 한식, 퓨전 한식 (Q3), 학생들의 판단력과 주도력, 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위해…, ~을 적절히 조합하는 것이 중요하다 (Q5)
- synthesise information and ideas for both texts supported with relevant references (Q3)
- reflect on own and others’ values and ideas by writing an effective letter, considering context, purpose and audience. For example, 님이 제기하신 것처럼, 공동체를 강화하는 것은 당연했지만, 현대사회의 일원으로서 명절에 대해 돌아볼 수 있는 계기, 학우님의 나눠 주신 뜻깊은, ~노력한다면 우리의 전통을 지키고 긍정적인 변화를 꾀할 수 있을 것입니다 (Q6).
Areas for students to improve include:
- avoiding irrelevant and unnecessary information
- minimising the use of repetitive ideas
- manipulating language structures to suit to audience, context and purpose and use a range of vocabulary
- analysing and explaining how the poet expresses the impact of advances in artificial intelligence (인공지능) on teenagers’ relationships (Q4).
Students should:
- use the conventions of the style of writing required by the question
- use language appropriate for the context, purpose and audience of the question
- use a wide variety of vocabulary, sentence structures and prescribed words and/or characters
- structure the response in a logical and coherent manner
- support their ideas and opinions with appropriate examples
- respond in Korean as stated in the question
- use appropriate register consistently throughout the response
- use vocabulary, expressions and structures relevant to the issue raised in the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- present and explain their opinions and ideas logically and with relevant examples that support their point of view in the blog post
- display breadth and depth analysis in their treatment of the issue – for example, 문화적 정체성 확립을 위해… 개방적인 사고 방식 … (Q7), 다른 이들의 문화를 존중함으로써 … 새로운 경험에서 느꼈던 긍정적인 요소로 … (Q8)
- use a variety of language structures and a variety of sophisticated vocabulary, for example, 소통, 교류, 가치관 (Q7), 일석이조, 공감, 공동체 의식, 나 자신의 문화와 정체성도 확고해 질 수 있는 경험을 하실 수 있습니다 (Q8).
Areas for students to improve include:
- identifying the correct audience, purpose and context
- reading and analysing the question accurately
- planning responses so that they are structured and sequenced, showing both breadth and depth in the treatment of the topic
- elaborating on ideas instead of providing a list of information
- adhering to the length required by the question.
