Section I – Listening and responding
Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- be prepared to communicate on a variety of topics relating to their personal world
- provide relevant details to address the questions in a way that engages with the examiner
- express ideas and opinions justifying their point of view by providing depth and insight in responses rather than short, prepared responses
- elaborate using a variety of vocabulary, phrases and expressions suitable to the question asked
- use a range of tenses to reflect on the past, present and future
- manipulate the language to fulfil the requirements of the question
- avoid repetition of the same vocabulary, phrases, expressions and grammatical structures
- be prepared to be interrupted by the examiner
- use Korean language to ask for repetition and/or clarification of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- speak clearly with excellent pronunciation, syntax, register and intonation
- answer the questions with minimal hesitation, allowing the conversation to flow at a good pace
- answer questions with relevant information and in some depth, for example, to communicate feelings, provide opinions and justify their responses
- address the requirements of the question
- elaborate on their responses without extra prompts from the examiner
- respond in full sentences, using compound and complex sentences
- use language structures and features effectively to enhance their responses, for example, ~에 있으면 ~하거나 ~를/을 해요. 하지만 ~해서 ~해야 했어요.
~은/는 ~지만 ~(ㅆ)어요. - demonstrate excellent knowledge of a wide repertoire of vocabulary, such as, 싸우다, 찬성, 과외, 의학, 건축학, 기념, 희망, 건강, 계획
- accurately use tenses as required by the question
- use authentic and idiomatic expressions appropriately, for example, 말씀드린 것 처럼 (as I said), ~다고/라고 해요/생각했어요.
- use a range of linking suffix appropriately, for example, ~아서/어서/여서, ~으니까, ~는데. ~지만, ~고.
Areas for students to improve include:
- expanding the answers by providing detailed information and ideas rather than repeating the questions
- preparing for the third person’s opinion questions, for example, ~는/은 ~대해서 어떻게 생각해요?
- responding in full sentences and avoiding single word answers
- using a range of sentence endings and honorific expression, for example, ~해 드려요. 하셔요and different tense, for example, ~(ㅆ)어요, ~아/어요,. ~할 계획이에요, ~해 본적이 있어요.
- using the different Korean number systems appropriately, for example, 이 년 동안, 두시간 동안
- listening to the whole questions carefully instead of listening for one key word and guessing the answers
- being familiar with vocabulary related to the topics in the Korean Continuers Course, for example, 가족행사, 선물, 장래 희망, 건강, 계절, 숙제.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column on the right-hand side of the page
- read the question carefully and respond to all parts of the question
- support their responses with relevant evidence from the text
- transcribe their responses onto the lines using the space allocated beneath the question
- use the number of lines as an indication of the required length of the response
- support their responses with reference to relevant content and language, using their own words
- avoid translating the text as part of the response but rephrase with own words.
In better responses, students were able to:
- justify the reasons supported by the detailed reference to the text (Q4)
- summarise the main ideas of the speech concisely (Q6)
- demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the changes of emotion with detailed reference to the text (Q8).
Areas for students to improve include:
- learning a wider range of vocabulary, for example, 운동화 sneakers (Q2), 전기차 electric car (Q4) and expressions, 쇼핑센터가 문을 열어요 the shopping centre will be opening (Q8)
- not writing all of the details with examples in the text for the summary question (Q6)
- providing detailed understanding of the changes of emotion (Q8).
Students should:
- read the title, questions and the whole text before responding
- use the lines or space beneath the question for the response
- support their responses with reference to content and language, using their own words
- write responses addressing the relevant details required by the question and avoiding repetition
- focus on key words in the question; for example, ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘explain’, ‘justify’ and respond in relation to the context of the text
- read the whole text in order to demonstrate understanding of relevant information and ideas
- identify the key issue(s) and provide examples to substantiate the response when asked to analyse or evaluate information
- draw a conclusion or justify a point of view using their own words
- provide main points or ideas when asked to summarise
- avoid providing a literal translation of the text
- use the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word(s) or expressions in context.
In better responses, students were able to:
- explain the benefits and the problems of the proposal (Q9b,c)
- compare the usefulness of two opinions with detailed reference to the text (Q10c)
- analyse how content and language are used to express how the personality is revealed (Q9d) and how decisions are made from an emotional perspective (Q10d)
- draw conclusions from the text, supported by appropriate references and examples.
Areas for students to improve include:
- identifying the reasons for writing the letter (Q9a)
- answering questions in their own words instead of just translating the text
- learning the Korean expressions of the rhetorical questions and high modality words, for example, 절대로 never, 꼭 definitely (Q10d)
- including specific reference to content, language and language techniques where required.
Students should:
- respond to the question in relation to the text
- read the entire text in order to respond to the question
- use the conventions of the type of text required by the question
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text in the response, not just respond to questions asked
- focus on relevant information and key points raised in the text to respond to comments made, requests for advice, issues discussed, and observations made
- use the appropriate register throughout the response
- provide a creative and authentic response in relation to the text and question
- use a variety of vocabulary and expressions and a range of grammatical structures
- plan effectively to organise thoughts, paying attention to purpose, audience, context and the type of text required in question
- edit work to ensure clarity of the response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- respond to the important points to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the stimulus texts
- accurately write with a variety of structures and use authentic expressions
- demonstrate an excellent ability to organise and structure ideas and information logically and coherently.
Areas for students to improve include:
- addressing the important points from the stimulus texts
- elaborating on their responses creatively to meet the requirement(s) of the task
- organising information and ideas in a logical manner appropriate to the text type and language conventions.
Students should:
- address all parts of the question
- use the appropriate register and conventions of the text type
- commence and conclude appropriately
- use the correct tense for the requirements of the question
- sequence the response logically
- use the dictionary effectively by selecting vocabulary to suit the context
- proofread and edit work
- adhere to the suggested word length and write the response authentically and creatively.
In better responses, students were able to:
- write appropriately for the audience, purpose and context of the question with correct text type
- demonstrate understanding of syllabus grammar, vocabulary, and syntax
- organise their ideas in a coherent manner with the ability to link ideas logically
Areas for students to improve include:
- analysing the question thoroughly and writing effectively for the correct audience, purpose and context
- sequencing and structuring ideas and information coherently
- improving spelling and grammatical accuracy.
