Feedback on practical exam
Performance
Two solo pieces
Students should:
- ensure the chosen repertoire is carefully matched to skills and technical ability
- consider the balance, contrast and interest within the overall program
- be familiar with and understand their performance space
- ensure sound checks are short and focused
- avoid splitting programs
- carefully tune instrument prior to and between performances
- have supportive and well-rehearsed accompaniment that allows for a secure musical outcome.
In better performances, students were able to:
- perform two pieces which contrast in style and character
- present repertoire to display highly developed technical skills and stylistic refinement
- display personal engagement and stylistic understanding throughout the performance
- sustain engagement and momentum for the duration of the program.
Areas for students to improve included:
- selecting repertoire which is within their technical ability and provides opportunity for variety and interpretation
- rehearsing in the performance space prior to the day of the exam
- demonstrating an awareness of the overall musical structure of the repertoire.
Ensemble piece
Students should:
- consider ensemble positioning allowing for effective interaction and engagement between performers
- have a supportive and well-rehearsed ensemble that allows for a secure musical outcome
- ensure ensemble repertoire is appropriate to demonstrate ensemble playing skills.
In better performances, students were able to:
- demonstrate different roles and engage within their ensemble
- successfully convey stylistic awareness
- sustain engagement and momentum for the duration of the piece.
Areas for students to improve included:
- demonstrating a unified sense of the ensemble’s direction
- selecting repertoire in which the musical interest is shared between the ensemble members and different roles are explored.
