Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Course specific marker notes
Characteristics of better responses:
- information that corresponded to the ambit of the topic was provided
- extended answers and insightful details were given
- an engaged and consistently sustained conversation, across a wide range of appropriate topics, was provided
- controlled use of a variety of tenses across a range of topic areas was evident
- a wide range of vocabulary and connectives, plurals and gender agreement were used accurately
- a depth of opinions and ideas were apparent
- cultural references were provided.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- answers that were purely descriptive or limited to simple lists of information were provided
- some relevant information was provided but there was no justification of the response
- limited use of tenses and grammatical structures was shown
- the conversation was developed using mainly the first person; candidates demonstrated difficulty when required to use third person
- limited understanding and use of language structures was demonstrated, including misuse of plurals and gender agreement, absence of prepositions, articles, and/or connectives
- a limited range of vocabulary, or repeated use of the same adjectives and/or language structures to answer different questions was used
- no cultural references were provided and/or Spanish words such as salsa, paella, were used inappropriately.
Characteristics of better responses:
- detailed answers were provided
- the responses of both speakers were clearly synthesised and understood (Q6)
- a sophisticated comparison, vocabulary and multiple points of comparison were used (Q6).
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- not all of the information required by the question was provided
- the details of the text were misunderstood (Q6)
- a comparison between father and daughter was not provided (Q6).
Characteristics of better responses:
- all required details were provided
- writing was coherent with appropriate textual references included
- summaries were concise and effective (Q12b)
- the changes in Ana’s attitude towards Lola were clearly articulated and linked to the relevant text references (Q14).
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- key details, essential to providing a complete answer, were missed
- ideas were not supported with relevant textual references (Q11b)
- elementary summary skills were evident (Q12b)
- limited conclusions were drawn with no explanation or juxtapositions (Q14).
Characteristics of better responses:
- requirements of the task were addressed and planning of responses was evident
- ideas were sequenced logically, giving appropriate flow to texts
- a range vocabulary and manipulated language structures were used to accurately convey information, present ideas and express feelings.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- requirements of the task were not followed, for example, the questions clearly required the description of a past event, but some responses were in the present tense (Q17 and 18)
- ideas and/or information were not conveyed in a coherent manner
- a restricted range of vocabulary, resulting in repetition was evident
- manipulation of language structures was limited resulting in responses that were often hard to follow.
