Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows each question and the criteria with each mark or mark range. Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Select from the link(s) below to view feedback about how students performed in this year’s examination.
Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Characteristics of better responses:
- a point of view was clearly identified right from the beginning
- arguments were structured and sequenced logically and coherently throughout monologues, making them convincing and easy to follow for the full three minutes
- clearly relevant and interesting examples to support arguments were provided
- presentations were delivered in a fluent and confident manner using a command of vocabulary and language structures.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- agreement with the proposition was generally stated but not supported
- a stance on the topic was not made clear
- the ability to structure or sequence an argument with any degree of coherence was not evident
- relevant ideas or examples in support were not provided or they were off topic
- problems with vocabulary and control of language structures led to repetition and/or difficult to follow responses
- the time allocated was not met.
Feedback on written examination
Question 1
Characteristics of better responses:
- detailed answers were provided
- it was concluded that despite the attempt to change inequalities, nothing actually changed (Q1d)
- it was argued that despite the system not really being affected, some actions showed a breakthrough, if only for a moment.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- one word answers without elaboration were given
- a recount of either one or both of the stories was provided, with little or no analysis
- the question, was misunderstood or over-thought.
Question 2
Characteristics of better responses:
- a comprehensive understanding of Secretos was demonstrated, including its plot and characters
- a detailed and accurate conversation between Laura and Sonia’s parents was written authentically from the perspective of the story’s characters.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- a significant lack of knowledge of Secretos was demonstrated
- a conversation between Sonia and Laura was presented
- limited creativity/originality was evident and the story was merely recounted.
Questions 3 and 4
Characteristics of better responses:
- the task requirements were met
- a perspective was explicitly identified
- ideas/opinions were clearly expressed, and these were justified with clear and interesting examples.
Characteristics of weaker responses:
- organisation and cohesion were lacking
- the same ideas were used repeatedly.
