2018 Tourism, Travel and Events HSC exam paper
Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the exam paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future exams. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written exam
Students should:
- focus on improving Australian destination knowledge.
- address all components of the question
- give specific detail relevant to the tourism, travel and/or events industry sectors.
- use industry relevant examples to demonstrate knowledge.
Question 16
In better responses, students were able to:
- were able to demonstrate understanding of ‘resource efficiency’ using an examples relevant to the day-to-day running of the resort, such as …… (b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- refraining from listing, but instead describing strategies (a).
- giving explanations that relate directly to the resort (b).
Question 17
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide two examples and solutions that related directly to a cruise using specific and relevant terminology (b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- using industry terminology specific to cruising, for example, cabins not rooms and passengers not customers (b)
- providing solutions that directly relate to the examples stated by the student (b).
Question 20
In better responses, students were able to:
- correctly identify a Whitsunday island by name (b)
- correctly describe the appeal mentioning specific products suitable to the whole family including both adults and children (aged 5 and 7yrs) (b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- recognising that the “Whitsundays” are located in Queensland (b)
- describing not list the appeal of the destination (b)
- relating the appeal of the destination to a young family including both adults and children (aged 5 and 7yrs) not teenagers (b).
In better responses, students were able to:
- explain with relevant industry examples, the impact of a range of technologies on work practices
- mention affects on workplace practices across several different sectors of the tourism and travel industry. For example: airlines, accommodation, events and tours.
- clearly explain using both positive and negative relationships.
Areas for students to improve include:
- linking the technologies to work practices
- relating how and/or why for several specific sectors.
Question 22
In better responses, students were able to:
- indicate the main features of a range of products and services for each major category (a)
- provide descriptive details of each element of a quotation (b)
- include features of “accuracy” and “terms and conditions” as an important element of a quotation (b)
- demonstrate a range of tourism and travel related products and services sold (c)
- accurately refer to legislation for several relevant products or services (c)
- explain with examples the importance of compliance (c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- providing relevant products and services for each of the major categories (a)
- avoiding the listing of elements in general terms (b)
- including (with a description) “terms and conditions” and “accuracy” (b)
- relating to the importance of compliance (c)
- referring to specific and relevant legislation for selling tourism and travel related products and services (c)
- including a range of tourism and travel related products and services in their explanation (c).
Question 23
In better responses, students were able to:
- clearly show similarities and differences between the roles of an event management company and the contractors (a)
- provide accurate characteristics and features of all six phases of staging the event (b)
- provide a detailed explanation of a wide range of resources required to stage the event (c)
- specifically address food, wine and music requirements (c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- comparing, not just identifying the roles of an event management company and the contractors (a)
- describing, not just listing the six phases of staging the event (b)
- providing specific details of why and/or how each resource is required (c)
- providing a range of relevant requirements/resources to address this food, wine and music festival (c).
