Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the exam paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future exams. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written exam
Students should:
- focus on improving Australian destination knowledge
- address all components of the question, including the key words
- give specific detail(s) relevant to the Tourism, Travel and Event Industry sectors
- use Industry relevant examples and correct terminology to demonstrate knowledge.
Question 16
In better responses, students were able to:
- show knowledge of the relevant process to derive the correct answer, for example, effective listening and use of a variety of questioning techniques that will assist in establishing the needs and expectations of customers which enable delivery of quality customer service to suit a variety of customer types (a)
- give explanations that relate directly to the tourism, travel and events industry, for example, in addition to your accommodation reservation, would you also like me to book flights /transfers/ tours (b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- using specific tourism, travel and events workplace examples (a) and (b).
Question 17
In better responses, students were able to:

- demonstrate their understanding of the relationship between customer service and business success specific to the tourism, travel and events industry (b).

Question 20
In better responses, students were able to:
- show knowledge of the relevant process to maximise opportunity for career progression for a specific sector of the tourism, travel and events industry (b).

Question 21
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate their knowledge of the relevant region in NSW
- identify and correctly name specific details for each category of gateways and transport networks / climate and seasonal factors / major towns and tourist areas / local facilities, attractions and entertainment.
Areas for students to improve include:
- identifying the key target in the question (NSW North Coast or NSW Outback)
- avoiding general comments and instead using a specific example for each of the categories of the region.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate their knowledge of specific tourism, travel and events businesses and link to Government strategies for minimizing impacts and increasing economic benefits.
Areas for students to improve include:
- avoiding general comments and instead using specific examples relevant to tourism businesses
- relating Government strategies to specific tourism businesses
- providing why and/or how examples relevant to tourism businesses.
Question 23
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate their knowledge of a wide range of relevant products and services (b)
- identify and give detailed explanation of additional suitable products for British Backpackers (c)
- relate product features to customer benefits.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using relevant Industry terminology rather than providing generalised information
- avoiding general comments and instead using specific tourism product examples suitable for British Backpackers
- demonstrating a clear understanding of tourism product features and benefits to British Backpackers.
Question 24
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate their knowledge of the different types of major events in NSW, such as the Royal Easter Show, Bathurst 500 Car Racing, Mardi Gras
- show knowledge of the relevant industry developments, specifically in online event ticketing and registration, that can for example assist organisers in planning and record keeping, provide opportunity for easy communication with attendees in the lead-up, monitor attendance, facilitate refunds and create a database for future sales and marketing opportunities
- describe the benefits to event organisers (as above) and ticket purchasers (such as ease of process, clear information about what is being purchased, avenue for refund if event is cancelled, potential for alerts to future events that may be of interest)
- demonstrate their understanding of specific characteristics of people attending each event
- correctly identify and describe impacts of each event on the host community
- show knowledge of the relevant industry developments to derive the correct answer
- include specific Event industry terminology and definitions.
Areas for students to improve include:
- demonstrating a clear understanding of types of events
- using relevant terminology rather than providing generalised information
- avoiding general comments and instead using specific examples of relevant industry characteristics, impacts and developments.
