Supporting students with disability in Geography

Designing inclusive learning
Some students with disability may require adjustments and assistance as they develop an understanding of geographical concepts.
Students with disability in Geography K–10 will generally benefit from:
- support to make connections between people, places and environments and their own personal experiences
- pre-teaching of essential terminology with multiple opportunities to use and comprehend terminology in the context of geographical texts
- using visual and/or concrete materials to explore key geographic features, concepts or processes.
Students may also require adjustments to practical and/or fieldwork experiences as they develop geographical inquiry skills and use tools to acquire, process and communicate information.
In particular, students with disability may require support in Geography K–10 in relation to:
- understanding the language specific to geography
- selection of texts at an appropriate reading level when undertaking geographical inquiry
- collecting, organising and recording information for a geographical inquiry
- communicating geographical information
- responding to geographical texts
- accessing practical fieldwork locations.
