Supporting students with disability in History
Some students with disability may need support in History K–10 (2012). Learn about the range of ways to support them.
Designing inclusive learning
The teaching of History in K–10 involves the integration of knowledge and understanding, concepts and skills. Some students with disability may require adjustments and assistance as they explore historical concepts and apply historical skills as well as communicate their understanding.
In particular, students with disability may require support in History K–10 in relation to:
- recalling key people, events, features or forces of the past
- understanding the language specific to the study of history
- interpreting sources of historical information
- collecting, organising and recording information for historical inquiry
- communicating historical information
- recognising patterns of continuity and change over time.
Suggestions for supporting students with disability in History K–10 include:
- supporting students to make connections between historical events and personal experiences
- pre-teaching of essential terminology with multiple opportunities to use and comprehend terminology in the context of historical texts
- using visual and/or concrete materials to explore key features of people, events or societies from the past
- selection of texts at an appropriate reading level when undertaking historical investigation.
