New HSC course prescriptions for Latin Continuers courses 2025–2027
(Official Notice NESA 30/23)
Effective: Term 4, 2024
New course prescriptions for Latin Continuers Stage 6 (2014) for the 2025–2027 HSC have been published and are available in the syllabus section of the NESA website.
Implementation of the new course prescriptions will commence at the start of Term 4, 2024.
Schools are reminded that the study of texts prescribed for any HSC course may not begin before the completion of the Year 11 course. This exclusion applies to study in Year 11 of this course and Year 11 in other subjects.
Clarification of changes to HSC course prescriptions for Classical Languages and Languages and Literature courses

The HSC course prescriptions for Latin Continuers have been extended for an additional year. Last HSC 2024.
Changes to HSC course prescriptions for Languages and Literature and Classical Languages courses

Official notice NESA 19/22 replaces NESA 27/21.
Minor amendments to Stage 6 Latin Continuers HSC exam specifications

Effective: HSC 2019
Minor amendments have been made to the HSC exam specifications which are detailed in the assessment and reporting document.
The minor amendments apply to the 2019 HSC exam.
The minor amendments clarify:
- that questions 2 and 3 of Section I – Prescribed text: Prose and questions 5 and 6 of Section II – Prescribed text: Verse may require a reference to the rest of the Latin prescription
- the source of the unseen texts from which the extracts in Section III – Unseen texts will be taken.
New Stage 6 school-based assessment requirements

New school-based assessment requirements are to be implemented from Term 1, 2018 for Year 11 and Term 4, 2018 for Year 12. Course-specific assessment requirements are included in the assessment and reporting materials. Sample assessment schedules for Year 11 and Year 12 are available.
New prescriptions and amendments to the Stage 6 Latin Continuers and Extension syllabuses

Course prescriptions for the HSC Latin Continuers course 2018–2023 and HSC Latin Extension course 2017–2023 are now available. Minor related and other amendments have also been made to the Stage 6 Latin Continuers and Extension syllabuses.
Implementation of the amended syllabuses will commence for Preliminary students in 2015 for Latin Continuers and with the HSC 2016 for Latin Extension.
Amendments to the syllabus are:
- use of dictionaries in both the HSC Latin Continuers and Extension exams
- replacement of Philosophy with Historiography as one of the Extension course genres
- removal of information relating to text rotation. This information has been included in the course prescription documents
- changes to the way in which the length of the prose and verse prescriptions will be described.
Changes from current exam specifications
In Section III, there will be no choice for the first task. There will be a choice of 2 for the second task, both of which require the same text type.
