New HSC course prescriptions for Languages Extension courses 2025–2030

Effective: Term 4, 2024
New course prescriptions Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek and Spanish Stage 6 Extension for the 2025–2030 HSC have been published and are available in the syllabus section of the NESA website.

Implementation of the new course prescriptions will commence at the start of Term 4, 2024.
Schools are reminded that the study of texts prescribed for any HSC course may not begin before the completion of the Year 11 course. This applies to study in all Languages Extension Preliminary courses. It also applies to the study of a prescribed text in another medium, such as the film of a novel.
Amendment to [Language] Extension oral marking guidelines

Effective: Immediately
NESA has made a minor amendment to [Language] Extension oral marking guidelines for inclusivity reasons.

The change to the oral marking guidelines will enable students with a speech impairment or disability to access the higher mark ranges in languages courses.
HSC course prescriptions for Italian Extension 2020–2024

Effective: Year 12 2020, Day 1 Term 4 2019
NESA has amended the Italian Extension course prescriptions for implementation with Year 12 from Term 4, 2019.
NESA has shortened Extract 6 by omitting page 158. Extract 6 has also been divided into two extracts. 11 extracts are now set for study. Previously 10 extracts were set.
Extracts 1 to 5 are unchanged. The details for extracts 6 to 11 are below.
Extract 6: Pages 156 to 157
The extract starts “Il sognatore m’interroga.”and ends “Quel voto riguarda la mia storia, la mia vita.”
Extract 7: Pages 159 to 162
The extract starts “Oggi rivedo Niko.”and ends “… prima che la mi faccia tradisca la bugia e Terminator dimostri, con i fatti, che nessuno ha portato a spasso la sua incontinente vescica…”
Extract 8: Pages 179 to 182
The extract starts “Quando rientro a casa c’è mia madre seduta in soggiorno.” and ends “E la polvere della mia ombra è polvere di stelle.”
Extract 9: Pages 193 to 200
The extract starts “Da Beatrice mi trasformo in personaggi sempre nuovi: prima il maestro di chitarra, adesso il professore di geografia” and ends “Ti voglio bene” dicono gli occhi di Silvia. “Anch’io” rispondono i miei.”
Extract 10: Pages 212 to 217
The extract starts “Il brutto della vita è che non ci sono le istruzioni per l’uso.and ends “Io non ne sarò mai capace.”
Extract 11: Pages 235 to 241
The extract starts “L’estate è il motivo per cui si vive, ma questa è stata diversa.”and ends “E la vita è l’unica cosa che non s’inganna, se tu, cuore, hai il coraggio di accettarla…”

New course prescriptions for the 2020–2024 Higher School Certificate Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek and Spanish Stage 6 Extension courses have been published and are available to download in the syllabus section of the NESA website.
Implementation of the new course prescriptions will commence at the start of Term 4, 2019.

New Stage 6 school-based assessment requirements
(Official Notice NESA 29/17)
New school-based assessment requirements are to be implemented from Term 1, 2018 for Year 11 and Term 4, 2018 for Year 12. Course-specific assessment requirements are included in the assessment and reporting materials. Sample assessment schedules for Year 11 and Year 12 are available.
Changes from current exam specifications
In the written paper, there are no changes in Section I. In Section II, there will be a choice of 2 tasks, as is currently the case. However, the tasks will both require the same text type.
In the oral exam, the two 2-minute monologues have been replaced by a single 3-minute monologue.
