Performance band descriptions for Business Services
HSC performance band descriptions summarise the knowledge, understanding and skills typically demonstrated by students at each band level. NESA uses these holistic descriptions to report a student's level of achievement in the optional HSC exam.
Band 6
A student who performs at this level in the exam typically:
- demonstrates extensive knowledge and understanding of HSC content in the focus areas (including mandatory and stream, where applicable)
- demonstrates comprehensive understanding and proficiency in the application of industry-related skills to workplace contexts and scenarios
- applies knowledge and skills to solve complex problems
- effectively presents logical and cohesive responses using relevant workplace examples
- effectively communicates ideas and information using a range of appropriate industry terminology.
Band 5
A student who performs at this level in the exam typically:
- demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of HSC content in the focus areas (including mandatory and stream, where applicable)
- demonstrates a well-developed understanding and proficiency in the application of industry-related skills to workplace contexts and scenarios
- applies knowledge and skills to solve familiar and unfamiliar problems
- presents logical and cohesive responses using workplace examples
- communicates ideas and information, using appropriate industry terminology.
Band 4
A student who performs at this level in the exam typically:
- demonstrates sound knowledge and understanding of HSC content in the focus areas (including mandatory and stream, where applicable)
- demonstrates sound understanding in the application of industry-related skills to workplace contexts and/or scenarios
- applies knowledge and skills to solve familiar problems
- presents logical responses using workplace examples
- communicates ideas and information, using industry terminology.
Band 3
A student who performs at this level in the exam typically:
- demonstrates basic understanding of HSC content in the focus areas (including mandatory and stream, where applicable)
- demonstrates basic understanding of workplace skills
- presents a basic response using workplace examples
- communicates information using basic industry terminology.
Band 2
A student who performs at this level in the exam typically:
- demonstrates elementary understanding of HSC content in the focus areas (including mandatory and stream, where applicable)
- demonstrates limited understanding of workplace skills
- communicates using non-industry specific terminology.
Band 1
Performance reported as Band 1 indicates that the minimum standard expected was not demonstrated.
