The 2026 HSC exams begin for 13,000 students

From today, 773 Dance students will kick-off performance exams, with another 3,026 students taking to the stage for Drama and 5,639 students completing their Music exams over the coming 6 weeks. 

In total 8,487 students studying Dance, Drama and Music will undertake an HSC performance exam, presenting choreographed routines, dramatic performances, musical works and compositions before markers. 

On Saturday, students studying a Language for the HSC also started exams, with the oral examination period running each Saturday for the next 5 weeks. 

4,987 students will complete oral examinations across more than 29 languages and 50 language courses. Conducted one-on-one with trained examiners, the exams assess students’ ability to communicate confidently and respond spontaneously in real-world situations. 

The oral and performance examinations, alongside practical works being submitted this term, mark the beginning of the 2026 HSC examination period, ahead of written examinations starting in October. 

As has been the case for the past decade, this year, a large proportion (35%) of the HSC cohort is completing a course with a practical component. 

This diversity of the HSC curriculum content and assessment provides students with opportunities to develop their skills for future learning and work.
