Global voices and creative talent: HSC language and performance exams begin
Some 10,000 students across NSW are stepping into the spotlight from today, with Dance students taking to the stage for the start of the HSC Performance exams, to be followed by Drama and Music students in the coming weeks.
Over the weekend HSC language exams also kicked off, with close to 5,800 students set to complete their oral exam over the next 5 weeks.
The exams mark the first major milestones in this year's Higher School Certificate exam period, ahead of written exams in October.
From captivating solo acts and ensemble performances to confident conversation in their chosen language course, students are showcasing their talent, skills and years of hard work.
This year 5,776 students are undertaking oral exams across more than 29 languages and 50 languages courses - from Arabic to Modern Greek, Chinese to Spanish - with all exams conducted one-on-one with markers in secure and supportive environments.
Meanwhile, 9,657 students in Drama, Dance and Music will take the stage for their performance exams, which include dramatic monologues and ensemble pieces, musical compositions and choreographed routines.
Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), Paul Martin, said these types of exams reflect the diversity, talent and dedication of students' learning across the state.
"HSC Languages and Performance exams highlight the depth of learning and creativity in our schools.
"Languages students are demonstrating their ability to hold real-time conversations in their chosen language - a skill that connects them with different cultures and communities.
"At the same time, our creative arts students are showcasing their passion, expression and commitment through performance.
“These are more than exams – they are celebrations of communication, identity and the arts. They reflect years of preparation and the support of incredible teachers,” Mr Martin said.
In recent years the languages with the highest enrolments have included Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian and Spanish.
In the Creative Arts, thousands of students continue to pursue performance pathways that blend skills, passion and storytelling.
"To every student taking on these HSC exams - congratulations on reaching this point. Whether you're performing on stage or speaking in another language, your efforts and achievements are something to be proud of.
“Language and creative skills don’t just prepare you for the HSC – they prepare you for life,” Mr Martin said.
The oral exams for languages have marked the official start of the 2025 HSC exam season, with performance exams continuing until 19 September. HSC Written exams begin 16 October.
