Learn about registering for the building and construction industry portable long service payments scheme if you are an employer or working director.
Registering for the scheme
The building and construction industry portable long service payments scheme (the scheme) is free to eligible employers. Funding for the scheme comes from a levy on all NSW building and construction work that costs $250,000 or more. The scheme works in the following way:
- The person or company responsible for that work pays the levy to Long Service Corporation (LSC).
- LSC pays long service entitlements to registered workers.

Register as an employer
Employers in the building and construction industry in NSW need to register with LSC.
Visit the Australian Taxation Office or Fair Work Ombudsman to determine if you have:
- workers, or
- contractors.
You may also be classified as a worker or contractor if you are:
- in a partnership
- a trustee, or
- a working director.
If you do not employ workers and only engage contractors in the building and construction industry, then you're not required to register as an employer with LSC.
