Program objective
Objective 1:
To enable clients to live in dignity and comfort throughout the palliative stage of illness by providing physical, functional, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual support to the client, carer and family, with consideration of cultural and lifestyle values.
Most of the care is provided in the community, and is a more flexible, specialised service, with higher levels of training and supervision than is currently provided under other volunteer visitor schemes.
Service is also provided to palliative care patients and their families in Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital (BMDAMH), Springwood and Lithgow Hospitals.
The service has an appropriate philosophy, values, culture, structure and environment for the provision of competent and compassionate palliative care
Safety and quality is reflected in service provision and development.
Objective 2:
Maintain formal working partnerships with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District and NBMLHD Supportive and Palliative Care Service.
BMPSS works closely and collaboratively with the NBMLHD Supportive and Palliative Care Service Volunteer Co-ordinator.
Objective 3:
A vital aspect of the service is the local knowledge, community contacts and networks linking the provision of palliative care with the community in the Blue Mountains and Lithgow areas.
Service provision is supported through partnerships between the person, the family, the service providers and volunteers involved. The service has an important role in providing information and referrals to the general community as well as other non-government, community services and support groups.
