Program objective
Riparian protection projects assist land managers to manage their riparian areas in a way that improves water quality and promotes healthy, biodiverse, and productive systems. These projects involve the creation of buffers along rivers, creeks, permanent and non-permanent waterways through the construction of fences and establishment of native vegetation.
Protected riparian zones will help prevent localized erosion, reduce sediment and nutrient runoff into water courses helping to maintain healthy and resilient riparian ecosystems. Production benefits such as reduced parasite load, provision of shelter and improved water quality can also be achieved through well planned projects.
This program is funded and administered by Local Land Services.

Program evaluation
The Monaro Riparian Rehabilitation project was delivered in the 2022-2023 financial year in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council Area.
The project funded 11 landholders to protect and plant native vegetation with the aim of enhancing waterways and riparian areas on their property.
As part of this project 4,367 native tubestock plants were planted over 9.4ha and 87ha of remnant vegetation was protected from livestock impacts. In total 22.9km of stream bank was protected and enhanced through fencing, revegetation, the provision of off stream livestock water and ongoing management.
As well as achieving these tangible on-ground outcomes, this project has increased the capacity of participating landholders to protect and enhance their natural assets, leading to a more sustainable and productive landscape.
