Program objective
The purpose of the Nursing Fellowship program is to provide opportunity for nurses to develop
their expertise and leadership in research to build and retain clinical cancer research expertise in
NSW. The Nursing Fellowship scheme is open to nurses engaged in any discipline of research
relevant to cancer, undertaking their research at a research organisation located in NSW.
Successful applicants will:
- spend 0.5 FTE working on research for the duration of the grant
- conduct research projects aimed to develop their expertise in cancer research
- work with more senior colleagues in developing their research skills.
This program is funded and administered by Cancer Institute NSW.

Registration and Affiliation
Applicants must:
- be a nurse registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
- have a current appointment in NSW Health
- have a current affiliation with the Administering Institution or have the potential to become affiliated.
Endorsement
The applicant must have endorsement from the following individual and organisations.
Supervisor
A Supervisor, who will support the applicant to conduct the research. The supervisor must be
employed at the same organisation as the applicant’s clinical appointment, or at the Administering Institution (see 2.1.2.2).
Registered Administering Institution
Applications must nominate a single Research Administering Institution who will be responsible for the management of the grant and will enter into a Competitive Grants Agreement.
The Research Administering Institution must have in place policies and procedures for the
administration of public funds; for the management of Intellectual Property; and for proper conduct of research in relation to ethics.
Additionally, the Research Administering Institution must have good scientific practice, and will provide appropriate infrastructure to allow the research supported by the grant to be undertaken.
The Research Administering Institution and their nominated institutional contact must be registered with the Cancer Institute NSW. Refer to the list of Registered Research Administering Institutions.
Address the assessment criteria
Significance (30%)
Demonstration of the anticipated value-add and impact of the proposed research to nursing cancer research in NSW and the potential for this proposed research to improve cancer nursing practice in NSW.
Clear rationale for the research needs the project will address, including addressing the needs of consumers.
Scientific Quality (20%)
The excellence of the research proposal, based on the project design and methodology.
The feasibility of successfully delivering the proposed research outcomes in the timeframe, including identification of key milestones and success indicators to monitor the research progress.
Potential (30%)
The clarity of the career objectives for the next two years and how these will be achieved and supported by the Supervisor, including a skills development plan.
The leadership quality and the ability to promote the advancement of nursing cancer research via professional contributions.
Track Record (20%)
Demonstration of relevant professional qualifications, skills, knowledge and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research.
The depth of nursing and research experience, with focus in the proposed area of cancer.
The quality of previous research outputs and their impact and reach.
The ability to attract and secure research projects, grants, awards, leveraged funding (Institutional support and other), relative to opportunity.

After the application is submitted
Successful applications will be decided by: Cancer Institute NSW Chief Executive Officer/Chief Cancer Officer and Cancer Institute NSW Board
All applications will undergo an eligibility check to ensure that applicants have met the requirements of the grant.
The Institute utilises an independent Grants Review Committee composed of external members who will score and rank applications based on an assessment of merit against the stated assessment criteria.
The Grants Review Committee will put forward recommendations for awarding of the grant to the Cancer Institute NSW Chief Executive Officer/Chief Cancer Officer and Cancer Institute NSW Board for consideration.
The Cancer Institute NSW Board will approve the awarding and funding of the Fellowships.
All applicants will be notified in writing of their application outcome.
