Program objective
The eligible project will need to support the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (NSW AECG) to deliver in its role as the peak advocacy body to the department on Aboriginal education by employing a Policy Officer to:
- undertake consultations, research, and analysis to inform advocacy and policy development in areas relating to Aboriginal education
- undertake evaluations and progress reporting on selected projects and initiatives relating to Aboriginal education
- provide community informed advice to the NSW Department of Education to support improved departmental policy development and initiatives
- support NSW Government implementation of Closing the Gap reforms and NSW Government priorities in Aboriginal education.
This program is administered by Department of Education.
Eligibility
This is a closed non-competitive grant process open only to the NSW AECG.
Who can apply
To be eligible for the Peak Advocacy Body Grant – NSW AECG, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- be registered or incorporated in NSW
- be a not-for-profit organisation or association
- comply with the requirements of applicable national and state laws and regulations on child protection
- accept and comply with the Terms and Conditions of the funding deed
- disclose any projects for which NSW government funding is currently being received, or has been applied for and not yet finalised
- is able to demonstrate alignment between their project and the aims of this grant
- have appropriate governance mechanisms and sound financial management and be able to demonstrate financial viability
- do not owe any reports or money to NSW Department of Education as a result of previous funding or grants
- have the appropriate type and level of insurance for the activities that are the subject of this grant.
Who can’t apply
The following applications will be deemed ineligible:
- from any individual or body other than the NSW AECG.
Types of projects funded under this grant
Funding may be used for the following purposes:
- Direct and indirect staffing costs for the Policy Officer role described in the grant objectives.
- Operating costs directly related to the Policy Officer role described in the grant objectives.
What can’t you apply for
Funding is not to be used for:
- staffing other than the Policy Officer role described in the grant objectives
- ongoing core organisational operating costs such as rent, utilities, consumables, travel, insurance
- paid to other organisations or persons as a grant
- purchase of assets or capital equipment
- prizes, gifts or awards
- political lobbying
- activities that are not aligned with NSW Department of Education policies
- expenditure that does not represent value for money
- activities funded by another government grant program.

Address the eligibility criteria
Each applicant, as part of an application response, must confirm that they meet the eligibility criteria below:
- be registered or incorporated in NSW
- be a not-for-profit organisation or association
- comply with the requirements of applicable national and state laws and regulations on child protection
- accept and comply with the Terms and Conditions of the funding deed
- disclose any projects for which NSW government funding is currently being received, or has been applied for and not yet finalised
- is able to demonstrate alignment between their project and the aims of this grant
- have appropriate governance mechanisms and sound financial management and be able to demonstrate financial viability
- do not owe any reports or money to NSW Department of Education as a result of previous funding or grants
- have the appropriate type and level of insurance for the activities that are the subject of this grant
Applicants that do not address the eligibility criteria in full may be excluded from the application process at the department's discretion.
Address the assessment criteria
Applications will be assessed based on the eligibility criteria, spending rules and objectives set out in the Peak Advocacy Body Grant - NSW AECG - Grant Guidelines (PDF 157.51KB).
Applications will also be assessed against the following assessment criteria:
- evidence that the applicant has appropriate experience, knowledge and capability to undertake the grant objectives, including:
- consultations, research, and analysis that inform advocacy and policy development in areas relating to Aboriginal education.
- evaluations and progress reporting on selected projects and initiatives relating to Aboriginal education.
- providing community informed advice to the NSW Department of Education to support improved departmental policy development and initiatives.
- supporting NSW Government implementation of Closing the Gap reforms and NSW Government priorities in Aboriginal education.
- evidence that the applicant has community support to undertake the grant objectives.

After the application is submitted
Successful applications will be decided by: Director, Research and Engagement, Aboriginal Outcomes and Partnerships
Once the application has been submitted there are six steps to the process for approving funding.
ASSESSMENT: Any applications for funding are checked for accuracy and completeness and assessed to ensure they meet the eligibility requirements. Applications will be assessed against the assessment criteria.
RECOMMENDATION: The assessment panel will make recommendation(s) in writing to the decision maker.
DECISION: The decision maker considers the recommendation(s) and makes the final decision(s) on provision of funding.
NOTIFICATION: Any successful applicant is advised of the outcome of their application in writing.
DEED: If successful, the applicant will be provided a Funding Deed for consideration and execution.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Following execution of the Funding Deed grant information will be published on the NSW Government Grants and Funding Finder.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by Wednesday 14 June 2023.
