What’s this about?
The NSW Government will deliver a major new public park and underground carpark in the heart of Bankstown, investing in the community infrastructure needed to support one of Greater Sydney’s fastest-growing centres.
Located in the CBD within walking distance of the Metro station, West Terrace Park will create a new community destination where people can relax, exercise and connect with nature close to homes, jobs and public transport.
The project will also retain public parking on the site through a new underground car park, while creating significant new public open space.
West Terrace Park forms part of the NSW Government’s Parks for People program and a $520 million investment in the Transport Oriented Development (TOD) Accelerated Precincts.
Reasons for consultation
With Bankstown expected to grow by around 46,000 residents by 2036, including approximately 18,700 new homes and 25,000 new jobs, the park will help address a recognised shortage of open space and ensure community infrastructure keeps pace with growth.
Benefit to the public
West Terrace Park will create a high-quality public open space in the heart of Bankstown, providing opportunities for recreation, relaxation and connection to nature close to homes, jobs and public transport. As part of broader NSW Government investment in the area, the project will contribute to a greener, more vibrant and better-connected city centre, while incorporating a new underground public car park to support access to the CBD.
Overview of the consultation process
The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is leading pre-design community engagement for the project, in partnership with the City of Canterbury Bankstown. Community members are encouraged to share their ideas on the future look, feel and use of the park. Feedback will directly inform the concept design, which will be developed later this year.
